Review-Supporters of Destroyer mastermind Dan Bejar have been regaled with enough material over the previous two years to keep even the smallest fan site busy. Between the New Pornographers' 2005 Bejar-heavy Twin Cinema and the Destroyer/Frog Eyes EP Notorious Lightning and Other Works, the hyper-literate, Bowie-loving Canadian has been on a roll. Destroyer's Rubies, his fifth full-length offering, is an amalgam of Streethawk: A Seduction's glam rock posturing, This Night's guitar-heavy psychedelia, and Your Blues' apocalyptic wordplay. Bejar's imagery is as impenetrable and volatile as ever — "Dueling cyclones jackknife/They got eyes for your wife and the blood that lives in her heart" — but musically, he's forged a solid enough foundation to ground it. Part of Bejar's charm comes from his innate ability to balance sadistic verse, music geek grandstanding, and bawdy refrains with enough major seventh chords to score a full season of Brady Bunch segues — "A Dangerous Woman Up to a Point"'s pre-chorus crescendo declares "Those who love Zeppelin will eventually betray Floyd/I cast off those couplets in honor of the void" before exploding into "I pictured heaven on earth made of clay, as your form dictated." Rubies is heavy on pop craft, with standout cuts like "European Oils," "3000 Flowers," and the manic title track echoing 2005's "Broken Breads" and "Streets of Fire," but it's more than just the art-house theater to the Pornographers' Twin Cinema, it's the absinthe-drunk projectionist reveling in the sheer hedonism of it all.

Review-Their second album and first for Interscope is almost wholly brilliant. Like Mogwai, Sigur Ros and a dozen others, TVOTR excels at making slowly-evolving tunes with vaguely anthemic choruses and lots of loud-soft dynamics. Unlike virtually any of those other bands, TV on the Radio mix a genuine and actual songwriting ability with their knack for finding sounds that appear to be "new." This record is crisper-sounding and incorporates more dance-based elements, but it's essentially a pop album. While the lack of the free web-released "Dry Drunk Emperor, a tribute to President Bush, is initially a bummer, the album percolates with enough pre-apocalyptic tension to satisfy anyone. In a Prince-pitched falsetto, the group sings "I was a lover/ Before this war," While throughout, the combination of melody and invention is always pitch-perfect (well, except on "Province" and "Let the Devil In," those songs sort of suck.) People of Earth: please make this band into total superstars and buy several copies of their album: one for the car, another for the office, etc. What we really need in our popular music is more weirdness, and more truth. --Mike McGonigal

Review-This debut album by the small-town girl with the big, powerhouse voice showcases two distinctly different sides of Kellie Pickler's music. The hard-riffing uptempo material recalls the heartland rock of Bob Seger and John Mellencamp, with Pickler providing a good-ole-girl twang. Among the highlights are the emancipated strut of "Red High Heels," the playful humor of "Things That Never Cross a Man's Mind," and the tomboy bluesiness of "One of the Guys." Yet the American Idol finalist turns pure diva on the over-the-top balladry of the album's other half, with swelling strings and arrangements that overpower rather than enhance "I Wonder" and "I'm on My Way." On such cuts, producer Blake Chancey (Dixie Chicks) never gives Pickler a chance to show the subtlety and nuance that makes music more an art than a competition. --Don McLeese

Review-Eight years after their debut release, Sweetback return with the mellow follow-up Stage [2]. The group — guitarist/saxophonist Stuart Matthewman, keyboardist Andrew Hale, and bassist Paul Denman (R&B diva Sade's backing band) — has crafted a laid-back album of retro-soul, contemporary R&B, melodic pop, and mildly experimental electronica. This time around, vocalists Chocolate Genius and Aya take over the lead singer duties from Sweetback's previous collaborators, Maxwell and Amel Larrieux. While the first album seemed like a hip furthering of the work the band did with Sade, Stage [2] feels even more like a side project — heavy on the electro atmosphere — with songs so minor and slight that they barely register. In that sense, those Sade fans hoping for more of the same accessible, jazzy, and sophisticated songs she is known for may or may not like this. There are some nice tracks, though, especially the Aya ones such as the atmospheric ballad "Lover," which would have fit nicely on Love Deluxe. Similarly engaging is the melancholy indie pop-sounding "Things You'll Never Know," which brings to mind the best Ivy. On the other hand, Chocolate Genius's woozy psychedelic vibe isn't as charming as Maxwell's dreamy croon, although the darkly acoustic "Jesus Girl" does sound a bit like Terry Callier produced by Jermaine Dupri. While the album isn't fully engaging, fans of quirky R&B looking for a mellow listen may find Sweetback a minor delight.

Review-Savane, the great African guitarist and bluesman Ali Farka Touré's final solo studio album, was recorded in his native Mali toward the end of his life, when the artist knew his days were numbered. He spent his last years in his home village of Niafunké, concentrating on farming and family matters, jamming with local musicians of an evening. This impassioned, roots-drenched, mostly acoustic valedictory finds the Maestro's stalking rhythms and high-noon-at-the-crossroads, dusty desert-to-delta vocals in no less than life-summing form. "Soya" (track 5) seems to stand still in a million directions, while "Hanana Soko" (track 9) features a searing njarka fiddle spinning delirious circles around its throaty accompanying percussion. Pee Wee Ellis (sax) and Little George Sueref (harmonica) each manage to make strong impressions while adhering to the groove at hand. Afel Boucoum, a talented younger musician who has been mentioned as Touré's most likely successor (as if such a thing were possible!), graces "Njarou," the last tune. The other players are also at the top of their game, as fluttering ngoni (a West African spike lute) riffs weave in and out and airy female vocals float like a breeze off the river Niger. There are reports that Touré senior sat in on his son's upcoming album and scads of archival material will undoubtedly materialize. But his unsentimental, voluptuously masculine, spirit-guided magic is captured at its best, for all time, in this magnificent farewell. --Christina Roden

Biography-Citizen Cope is both a person (Clarence Greenwood) and a band. Born in Memphis, Greenwood is obviously the leader of the group, as he plays the keyboard, guitar, sings, and acts as a DJ, songwriter, and producer. Greenwood first broke into the music biz by appearing on albums by Maryland rapper Basehead (1993's Not in Kansas Anymore and 1996's Faith) and issued the first Citizen Cope album around this time, titled Cope Citizen. Greenwood followed it by donating songs to several independently issued compilations throughout the remainder of the decade (1997's Settling the DC Score, 1999's Anti-Rascist Action Benefit) as well as movie soundtracks (1999's Eat Me and Clubland). He also appeared on Lazy K's 1997 album Life in One Day. By 2000, Greenwood had inked a deal with the Dreamworks label, which issued his debut full-length, Citizen Cope, in 2002 (his actual first album, made with Capitol in 1997, was never released). Greenwood felt the label "mishandled" the record, however, and as their relationship wasn't improving, the singer looked to buy out his contract with the label and used his advance from his next home, Arista, to do it. But the problems didn't end there. Things didn't work out with Arista, either, and Greenwood moved on to RCA. His first album for his new label, The Clarence Greenwood Recordings, hit the shelves in September of 2004, receiving enough attention that one of its songs, "Son's Gonna Rise," was used in a GM Pontiac commercial. Two years later, and still with RCA, Every Waking Moment came out.

Review-My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way has alternately described his band's third album as "completely over the top" and "borderline psychotic." But even those words can't adequately prepare fans of the group's 2004 platinum major-label debut, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge, for the onslaught of twisted song suites, glam-rock cannon fire and drama-club theatrics that make up The Black Parade. Tracks like "Mama" and "The End" make "Bohemian Rhapsody" sound like "Blitzkrieg Bop." It's no coincidence that the disc feels as dizzyingly monumental as Green Day's American Idiot--after all, the two albums share the same label, producer, studio, janitorial team, and sense of apocalyptic dread. Similarly, The Black Parade will cast its creators in a completely new light. Despite its overly histrionic tendencies and a totally oddball cameo from Liza Minelli, it offers a clear signal that My Chemical Romance is ready to be taken seriously. --Aidin Vaziri

Review-The Outsider is either a concept record about musical schizophrenia or a warehouse for 18 of the most idiosyncratic productions of DJ Shadow's career. And, to complicate matters, many of them are excellent. Although it trails his second production LP by only four years, The Outsider sounds like it includes the detritus of a decade's worth of false starts: celebrity production jobs (one track was originally intended for Zack de la Rocha), anonymously released comeback singles (the regional radio hit "3 Freaks"), collaborations with art rock figures (Kasabian, Chris James from a band called Stateless, Christina Carter from Charalambides), and a cavalcade of talented guest vocalists and rappers who predictably underperform (or get overwhelmed by their productions). The best thing about The Outsider is that it rarely attempts to be Endtroducing, Pt. 2. In fact, mainstream rap commands the first third of the record. Setting aside his sampler for a few tracks, Shadow proves that Lil Jon has nothing on him. (Certainly, if Shadow ever made a concerted effort at commercial rap production, Scott Storch would soon be back making sandwiches in Philly.) For "3 Freaks," he pushes a couple of San Francisco's finest hyphy hip-hop stars, Keak da Sneak and Turf Talk, for a digital track that's as experimental as should be expected from Shadow, but just commercial enough to light up urban radio. (Granted, rap radio can be a surprisingly experimental place.) The paranoid synth of "Turf Dancing" finds Shadow cruising out to Vallejo, David Banner stops by for "Seein Thangs," and the Sick Wid It fiend Nump spins a tale of gritty paranoia on "Keep Em Close." From there, the roller coaster begins banking sharply; Shadow follows up a New Orleans guitar elegy worthy of Hendrix himself with a madcap punk-into-R&B instrumental. His tribute to John Cage precedes the Kasabian feature, and vocalist Chris James is drafted to impersonate Bono on "Erase You" (where he continually intones an interesting phrase, "under the blood red sky") and, two tracks later, Chris Martin on "You Made It." Aside from the artist himself, the only other thing that unifies this record is a crack band called the Heliocentrics, which proves its chops throughout the LP — but nowhere better than on the first song, a dead ringer for Marvin Gaye's "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)" with vocals from a singer that not even DJ Shadow could identify (probably picked up during one of his record-shop binges). The Outsider is a carefully crafted, artistically elusive mess — far more scattershot than even his first UNKLE record (Psyence Fiction), but much more interesting for its excellent productions.

Biography-Citing influences such as the Jam, the Clash, and the Smiths, Arctic Monkeys create a vibrant punk-inspired sound well suited for Britpop and alternative rock fans alike. Alex Turner (vocals/guitar), Jamie Cook (guitar), Andy Nicholson (bass), and Matt Helders (drums) formed Arctic Monkeys in Sheffield, England, in 2003. A year prior, Turner and Cook received guitars for Christmas. From there, these teenagers made practicing an obsession, memorizing hits by the White Stripes and the Vines. A deal with Domino, the label home to Franz Ferdinand and Clinic, followed in spring 2004. Rambunctious first single "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" debuted at number one on the U.K. singles chart in October 2005. Their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, was issued in January 2006; within a day of its release, the album sold 118,501 copies in the U.K., setting a record for more records sold than the rest of the Top 20 album chart combined. In America, the album scraped the bottom of the Top 40. On their first North American tour, bassist Andy Nicholson sat out due to fatigue. Nick O'Malley temporarily stepped in to play the tour; however, the band announced that Nicholson was officially out of the band in June 2006.

Review-Amazon.com's Best of 2001Low are well-practiced in the art of using less to inspire more. Their minimal indie-rock melodies create somber moods with sparse instrumentation. Every chord, staggered drum beat, or note from front woman Mimi Parker's voice hangs in the air with the importance of a slow-motion raindrop falling to a parched earth. The Dirty Three are equally conservative with their skills, creating emotional flurries by simply dragging a bow across a violin, or strumming a note from a guitar, sometimes building the two into a storm of sad beauty.It was a brilliant mind, then, that schemed to bring Low and the Dirty Three together for In the Fishtank, a natural fusion of Low's woeful elegance and Dirty Three's delicate folk. As Parker croons like a country girl with a broken heart, these somber lullabies stretch like lost rural highways across the post-rock landscape. Although it's a sonically quiet album, it's beautiful in its simplicity, saying so much in so many pregnant spaces. The final track, "Lordy," is definitely the standout, though, sounding like an old gospel gem that builds intensity as the bands jam around the lyrics "Lordy, save my soul/ From sinning/ From myself." Overall, In the Fishtank is an inspired set of material that will make slowcore fans hope these greatly talented bands record together more often. --Jennifer Maerz

Review-On his third, self-titled effort, Ben Kweller takes the notion of "solo album" to the extreme, playing all of the instruments himself. For many artists, this would result in an album that's quiet and insular. However, Ben Kweller is nearly as immediate and direct as Sha Sha and On My Way were, but with a little more focus. Kweller's eternally boyish voice is perfectly suited to his tales of young love, hanging out and heartache, whether he frames them in giddy, impatient pop like "Run," earnest tone-poems like "Thirteen," or a sound somewhere between the two, as on the single "Summer Dress." To his credit, though, Kweller sounds a little more mature on several songs, particularly "Penny on the Train Track" and "Red Eye," which asks the surprisingly direct question, "How long will it take before I have your heart to break?" Equally divided between thoughtful ballads such as "Until I Die" and half good-natured, chugging power pop like "Gotta Move" and "Magic" — with the occasional feisty rocker like "This Is War" thrown in for good measure — Ben Kweller treads the same path as Kweller's other work, but fortunately, it still sounds genuine, not formulaic.

Review-Three years between Weird Al Yankovic albums has been the norm since the '90s, but a lot happened to the parody king between 2003's Poodle Hat and his 2006 release, Straight Outta Lynwood. First off, Poodle Hat stalled after one single. Then while on tour promoting the album, Yankovic's parents were both killed in their home from carbon monoxide poisoning. Al handled the issue quickly and honestly with his fans, promising to carry on before disappearing for a couple years to cope. Then he came back with the pretty good "You're Pitiful" — a riff on James Blunt's "You're Beautiful" — and as the track wormed its way around the Internet, Blunt's label, Atlantic, recanted their permission for the parody after they had already granted it. The latter event is something Al's been through before and it always drums up some hype, but his quick and snide reference to Atlantic Records in the "White & Nerdy" video seemed genuinely ticked and wiped away some suspicion the whole thing was staged. "White & Nerdy" — a suburban take on Chamillionaire's big hit "Ridin'" — is the hilarious reason to celebrate his return, and the album it lands on is inspired. The original, non-parody material is usually where the man stumbles, but here the ridiculous "Weasel Stomping Day" and clever "Don't Download This Song" offer something that isn't filler. "White & Nerdy" — where the terminally uncool singer boasts he's a "whiz at Minesweeper" and "fluent in JavaScript as well as Klingon" — is up there with his best, and "Canadian Idiot" — a hockey-loving, toque-wearing rip on Green Day's "American Idiot" — is great, making this effort already one highlight better than Poodle Hat. The latest installment in his series of polka parody melodies — this time it's "Polkarama!" — is a brilliant roll through the recent hits of Modest Mouse, 50 Cent, Rihanna, and many more with a short tribute to the legendary Spike Jones stuck at the end, a thrilling moment for novelty fanatics. Topping it off is the 11-minute "Trapped in the Drive-Thru," which turns R. Kelly's epic "Trapped in the Closet" into an excruciating — but funny — wait for that greasy bag that will most likely contain the wrong order. This handful of prime Yankovic overshadows the only mildly humorous Usher and Taylor Hicks parodies and the couple original tunes that really drag, but Yankovic's fans don't expect perfection until the next "best-of" rolls around. Lynwood's highs are higher than usual, with Yankovic trying harder and landing more shots. Turns out novelty music's silliest hitmaker is a survivor.

Biography-Washington-raised artist, dancer, and songwriter Dawn "The Faun" McCarthy formed Faun Fables in 1997. After a self-released debut, 1999's Early Song, her powerful voice, penchant for performance art, and British folk-infused rock with lyrics steeped in Pagan imagery attracted the attention of Nils Frykdahl (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum). Frykdahl became a frequent collaborator, appearing on 2001's Mother Twilight. The following year, McCarthy premiered her musical The Transit Rider, with the accompanying soundtrack due in 2004. The duo released Family Album that same year on Drag City Records, followed by the conceptual Transit Rider in 2006.
Review-In the early '70s, there were numerous obscure British folk-rock albums with an out of time quality treading in mysticism. Family Album is like those albums, yet even more out of time in a way, considering there were very few artists on either major or indie labels doing anything like this in 2004. You get the feeling you've stumbled on a musical play in a forest that's enacting some mythical tragedy or epic adventure, though there's no actual central plot or story tying the songs together. Vintage British folk-rock is the musical touchstone, as many of the songs feature similar kinds of folky melodies with an ancient haunted (and sometimes morbid) quality, sounding as if they've drifted into modern times by mistake, as well as fairly acoustic-based instrumentation. It's atmospheric, but not all that enchanting: the songs can be overly precious, with a tense melodrama to the vocals and melodies that sometimes makes you feel like vocalist Dawn McCarthy is wrestling with an invisible demon the audience can't see. McCarthy sings most of the material in a high though not exceptional voice that again recalls many British folk-rock sirens of yore, occasionally stepping aside for collaborator Nils Frykdahl to take lead vocals in a less effective rough growl. The menu of storytelling-like songs is certainly varied, and it's not all folk-rock, going into opera and eerie gospel on "Higher," theatrical music that sounds like a combination of Judy Collins and Grace Slick on "Carousel With Madonnas," Nick Cave-like angst on Frykdahl's "Rising Din," and new wave-ish dance rhythms on the cover of Brigitte Fontaine's "Eternal." It all adds to the weirdness of a record that's genuinely strange, even if the results don't seem to match its ambitions.

Review-Nearly a decade after Eurythmics went on an unannounced, virtually unnoticed hiatus in 1990, Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart returned with the heavily publicized Peace. Both Lennox and Stewart had been silent since 1995, which means that reuniting really wasn't a sacrifice, since their solo careers had stalled. In fact, it was a wise idea to re-team, both commercially and artistically, since their best and most popular music was made together. What's odd is that Peace strongly resembles Lennox's Diva. True, Eurythmics were moving toward the melodramatic grandeur of Diva on their final '80s album, We Too Are One, yet they still had an innate sense of quirkiness and a desire to take risks. In 1999, they're more about craft, which only emphasizes the maturity of the music. That's not entirely a bad thing, even if it means that Peace needs a couple of spins before the songs begin to register. Lennox and Stewart know how to write gently insinuating melodies and how to layer their tracks with small sonic details, weaving lush tapestries of sound. Peace keeps its alluring mood throughout; even when they attempt to revisit their Stones-y tendencies, the songs play as sleekly and smoothly as the ballads that dominate the record. In one sense, that's good, because it means that Peace keeps a consistent tone from front to back, but it also means that most of the songs blend together. There are no standout singles here, and that's the hardest thing to accept about the record since Eurythmics were one of the best singles bands of the '80s. Even so, Peace is a successful debut for Eurythmics, Mark II — it's classy adult pop, delivered with style and grace.

Review-Joe Pernice and his compatriots have taken one step forward and one step back on the fifth studio album from the Pernice Brothers, Live a Little, and both moves have served them well. Live a Little finds the band teaming up again with Michael Deming, the producer who worked with Joe Pernice during the latter days of the Scud Mountain Boys and was behind the board for Overcome by Happiness, the Pernice Brothers' debut. Live a Little lacks the gloss of Discover a Lovelier You or the harder surfaces of Yours, Mine & Ours (both of which were produced by Thom Monahan), but it also feels considerably fuller and more mature than the quiet, tentative texture of the debut. Live a Little sounds more open and roomy than the past few Pernice Brothers efforts, while at the same time reflecting the lusher pop sound the band has embraced since 1998; a bit of the gingerbread has been stripped away, but the sound is still classic-style pop at its most delicious, buoyed by Deming's subtle string charts. And while there's a bit less of the "sunshine pop for a cloudy day" mood of their previous albums on Live a Little, Joe Pernice remains one of the finest songwriters at work today, and these 11 new songs (plus a remake of "Grudge F***" from the final Scud Mountain Boys album) find him in superb form — the melodies are intelligent but hooky, with the touches of tart sophistication never getting in the way of their sweetness, and his lyrics walk a glorious tightrope between the classic adolescent obsessions of rock (i.e., girls) and the more troubling concerns of adulthood (i.e., women). And as usual, Joe's collaborators deliver the goods, especially Peyton Pinkerton on guitar and James Wallborne on keyboards, playing these songs with the passion and skill they richly deserve. No one in indie pop has consistently delivered such impressive results in the new millennium as Joe Pernice, and Live a Little makes it clear he isn't done making superb music anytime soon.

Review-Giorgio Moroder did a lot of soundtrack work during the early '80s, and one of his most well-known soundtracks is that of Scarface, the iconic Al Pacino film from 1983. Of all the films Moroder scored, from American Gigolo (1980) and Flashdance (1983) to Electric Dreams (1984) and The Never Ending Story (1984), Scarface is undoubtedly the one that withstood the test of time most impressively, growing in popularity as the years passed (culminating in a well-received DVD reissue in 2003 that probably did more business than the film itself did its first go round). The same cannot be said about the film's soundtrack, however. While each of Moroder's aforementioned soundtracks spun off huge hits — "Call Me," "Flashdance," "Together in Electric Dreams," and "Never Ending Story" — Scarface fell more in line with another not-exactly-successful Moroder soundtrack, Metropolis (1984), one that is better known for its dubious taste than its actual music. Regardless, the Scarface soundtrack is indeed well known, even if only because of the film's cult following. But yeah, the music is of dubious taste — party hardy post-disco synth rock sung by Everywoman divas like Deborah Harry (most notably), Amy Holland (remember her?), and Elizabeth Daily (Valley Girl, anyone?) — which is precisely what makes Scarface so much sheer fun. Like the film itself, it's just so over the top, so overstylish, so unmistakably 1983 that you can't help but savor the outright absurdity of it all. What an age it was! And few songs embody it as perfectly as Harry's "Rush Rush," a bubbly post-disco ode to yayo (aka llello) that just screams out "early '80s" in fine polyester leisure-suit fashion. Elsewhere, the pair of Daily songs, "Shake It Up" and "I'm Hot Tonight," could be taken seriously, in a Pat Benatar or Patty Smyth kind of way, but they're definitely more enjoyably taken as camp. There's also Moroder's moody side-closing instrumentals, which are actually quite moving — but still beautifully kitschy. The overall effect is awfully amusing, even if it's one of those novelty CDs you pull out now and then strictly to humor friends (and yourself, somewhat guiltily). Then again, Moroder's craft, as always, is notably distinct for its stylishness, if not for its tastefulness.

Review-The guys in Califone are on a roll. Heron King Blues was one of the most interesting albums of 2004, and Roots & Crowns continues to build on their unique sound. On one hand, Califone's songs are pretty, melodic and acoustic more often that not; drawing musically from blues, folk, and Appalachia. On the other hand, they're radical experiments using feedback, noise, electronics and unfamiliar instruments and sounds to create sometimes otherworldly settings for their pretty songs. Factor in Tim Rutili's gift for utterly inscrutable lyrics and you've got a recipe for a band that sounds like no other. The methods remain much the same, but each time out the band brings in new elements. They bring back the "almost funk" of "2 Sisters Drunk on Each Other" from the last album on "Pink & Sour," also adding some sunny "oooh" backing vocals and a blast of Fripp-ian guitar. Adding a few horns to the mix, "Spider's House" almost sounds like it was arranged by Brian Wilson (but arranging for Califone, mind you), "A Chinese Actor" gets more into rock territory with chugging guitars and percussion and layers of noise and grit. The detailed arrangements and production are amazing: there's almost always a lot going on but there's still enough space for the songs to emerge. The sonic detail is a treat, with percussion of all sorts and electronic flotsam and jetsam all around the stereo field. Marimbas, pianos, guitars, strings, white noise, field recordings, samples and a host of other esoteric items all make themselves heard at various times. The songs themselves are easy to approach if difficult to decipher, and the production details reward repeated listens. This is a very original group who are really hitting their stride. They write interesting melodic songs, they've got brilliant ideas for arranging and production, and they've got the studio savvy to pull it all off in spectacular fashion.

Biography-Singer/songwriter Micah P. Hinson was born in Memphis, TN, into a strict Christian fundamentalist household. He began to experiment with music — as well as narcotics — upon moving to Abilene, TX, in his teens. Despite serving jail time, fighting addiction, and declaring bankruptcy — all before the age of 20 — Hinson became immersed in the local music scene. His debut was recorded in the winter of 2003 with assistance from Texas chamber pop collective the Earlies, which provided a lush backdrop for Hinson's winsome tales of love, loss, and regret. Micah P. Hinson and the Gospel of Progress was released on Sketchbook Records in April of 2005. It was followed in 2006 by Baby and the Satellite, his first for Jade Tree. Hinson kept busy that year, also issuing the debut EP Lights from the Wheelhouse from his more experimental project, the Late Cord, and another album for Jade Tree, Micah P. Hinson and the Opera Circuit, that fall.

Biography-Keb' Mo' draws heavily on the old-fashioned country blues style of Robert Johnson, but keeps his sound contemporary with touches of soul and folksy storytelling. He writes much of his own material and has applied his acoustic, electric, and slide guitar skills to jazz- and rock-oriented bands in the past as well. Born Kevin Moore in Los Angeles to parents of Southern descent, he was exposed to gospel music at a young age. At 21, Moore joined an R&B band later hired for a tour by Papa John Creach and played on three of Creach's albums. Opening for jazz and rock artists such as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jefferson Starship, and Loggins & Messina helped broaden Moore's horizons and musical abilities. Moore cut an R&B-based solo album, Rainmaker, in 1980 for Casablanca, which promptly folded. In 1983, he joined Monk Higgins' band as a guitarist and met a number of blues musicians who collectively increased his understanding of the music. He subsequently joined a vocal group called the Rose Brothers and gigged around L.A. 1990 found Moore portraying a Delta bluesman in a local play called Rabbit Foot and later playing Robert Johnson in a docudrama called Can't You Hear the Wind Howl? He released his self-titled debut album as Keb' Mo' in 1994, featuring two Robert Johnson covers, 11 songs written or co-written by Moore, and his guitar and banjo work. His second album, Just Like You, was equally well received. Slow Down followed in 1998 and Door was issued two years later. Big Wide Grin followed in 2001, while 2004 saw the release of two albums, Keep It Simple and Peace...Back by Popular Demand. Suitcase was issued in 2006 on Red Ink Records.

Biography-The Be Good Tanyas play an old-timey blend of folk, country, and blues bolstered by sweet harmonies and traditional fingerpicking. The Vancouver trio has garnered comparisons to like-minded predecessors such as Gillian Welch and Iris DeMent. The group came together when Samantha Parton, who had spent her post-high school years traveling with her guitar (drawing strong musical influence from visits to the Southern U.S.), returned to Vancouver. She and Jolie Holland initially formed the group, then added Frazey Ford and Trish Klein, who Parton had met while planting trees in Nelson, British Columbia. (Ford and Winnipeg native Klein had met at Selkirk Music School in Nelson.) The musicians played together for the first time in 1999, busking outside the Lilith Fair venue in Vancouver. They soon moved on to local thrift store and coffee shop gigs. Holland left the group, and the remaining trio was soon touring Canada and released their debut album, Blue Horse, in 2001. Two years later, the ladies returned with the lighthearted sophomore effort Chinatown, while Hello Love, which included covers of Neil Young, Mississippi John Hurt, and even Prince, came out in 2006.

Biography-Growing up in a nonmusical family in Phoenix, AZ, country singer Dierks Bentley got his country music education on his own, listening to recordings. A love of the music had him move to Nashville at the age of 19, but he quickly grew discouraged by lack of public and professional interest coming his way. It all changed when he walked into the Station Inn, a bar where the bluegrass faithful hang out. An all-night jam session recharged his batteries and he restarted pursuing gigs. He landed a job at the TNN television doing research on classic country music and by night he worked on his demos. Capitol Records heard the artist, signed him, and released his self-titled debut in 2003. Modern Day Drifter followed two years later and became a Top Ten hit.

Review-In the wake of 2005's Modern Day Drifter, Dierks Bentley has maintained fierce career momentum, earning awards, packing concerts, and joining the Grand Ole Opry in the space of just over a year. As before, he continues to flawlessly integrate straight-ahead, unforced vocals into a riproaring sound, underpinned this time by the solid, appealing mainstream acoustic bluegrass of touring partners the Grascals. The opening track, "Every Mile a Memory," defines the album's direction, buttressed by the witty "That Don't Make It Easy Loving Me." He projects clarity and desperation on "Trying to Stop Your Leaving," enhanced by an understated, yet appropriately tense arrangement. "Band of Brothers" celebrates the quintessential travails of musicians playing the low end of the honky-tonk circuit, while his all-inclusive, courageous views on "The Heaven I'm Headed To" may not please hardcore red-staters. The perpetual debate pitting country modernists against traditionalists often reaches the same levels of intensity as in current politics. Long Trip Alone demonstrates the smartest solution: quality modern country of the moment that simultaneously honors its past.

Review-Lucero have never been short on Replacements comparisons, which are still very much valid on Rebels, Rogues & Sworn Brothers, but this time around they come off more like the Memphis version of Bruce Springsteen — in the best possible way. This comparison is heard straightaway in the opening "What Else Would You Have Me Be?," and the subsequent music largely continues its loose and jangly feel, many songs rocking out in the tradition of those on 2005's Nobody's Darlings. However, thanks to the contributions of auxiliary player Rick Steff on nearly every track — switching between organs, accordion, and piano — the overall record sounds fuller and more direct than most of Lucero's past work. These extra touches cause rousing songs like the shimmering "I Can Get Us Out of Here" to be more triumphant, and the whiskey-soaked and weary homecoming of "On the Way Back Home" more affecting with a lonely accordion softly lamenting in the background. As always, frontman Ben Nichols owns the type of hapless charm that can simultaneously break your heart and fix it, his weathered voice like that of a close friend over six strings. The prominent interplay of rugged guitar and drums makes for a wholly gripping listen on darker cuts like "Sing Me No Hymns" and "The Weight of Guilt." Both match up compellingly with the gruff Southern drawl of Nichols, who douses his hoarse delivery in a hard-edged defiance that sharply cuts through the unusually threatening air, especially in the latter song with its challenging repetition of "If you can bear no cross, you can wear no crown." Reflections of love, regret, and longing dominate — whether missing the girl while out on the road or making drunken promises when she's close enough to kiss — yet Lucero's leathery alt-country melodies never forget that stirring balance of tenderness and toughness, heartache and wonder. It's that balance that ultimately makes Lucero so damn likable, and their music so damn good that you can't help but want to dance, sing, and drink along right there beside them all night.

Biography-The Little Ones are comprised of Ian Moreno, Edward Nolan Reyes, Brian Reyes, Lee Ladouceur, and Greg Meyer. Coming together in Los Angeles in early 2006, the summery-sounding Little Ones wear their influences (the Beach Boys, the Zombies) on their sleeves while composing some of the brightest indie rock of the new millennium. They self-released their debut EP, Sing Song, that spring. That fall, the band landed a worldwide deal with Astralwerks — Heavenly Recordings in the U.K. and Europe and Astralwerks in the Americas. A reissued version of Sing Song, which included a previously unavailable bonus track, arrived in October.
Review-The magical indie pop of Sing Song is a delightful introduction to the Little Ones. The California collective join David Newton of the Mighty Lemon Drops to co-produce the EP, and songs such as the handclap-happy "Let Them Ring the Bells" and jamboree-like "Cha Cha Cha" showcase the band's long suit of simplicity. "Hey MJ!" recalls the chiming guitars of the Trash Can Sinatras' "Killing the Cabinet" for another EP standout. While they don't venture too far away from the common text of indie rock, the Little Ones are onto something good here. It's their good-natured modesty in song and earnest efforts in craft that make Sing Song the hidden treasure that it is, and those who worship Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, the Shins, Arcade Fire, and Neutral Milk Hotel should embrace these six lovely tidings. The jaunty guitar-driven "Heavy Heart Brigade" says it all: "We sought our future in rock & roll/Now we are locked outside its door/Are we ever gonna figure it out?" The Little Ones have pledged their hearts to making some quality music, so they've figured something out. Thank goodness for that.

Review-There's a swagger and aggression to Blue Cheer's power blues that can be traced through the decades of heavy metal and the post-metal mutations of hard music. The second of only two Blue Cheer recordings featuring the classic lineup of Leigh Stephens on guitar, Dickie Peterson on bass and lead vocals, and Paul Whaley playing drums, Outsideinside, along with its predecessor, Vincebus Eruptum, ranks among the most underappreciated hard rock collections ever. Blue Cheer's second, more refined offering stands as a testament to the power-for-its-own-sake mentality that helped forge '70s hard rock out of the blues, psychedelia, and energetic rock & roll. Whaley's hyper drumming sounds almost punk during a frantic rework of the Rolling Stone's "Satisfaction" and the instrumental "Magnolia Caboose Babyfinger." This was quite an accomplishment considering that Outsideinside was released a full year before either the Stooges' debut or MC5's Kick Out the Jams. Stephens' fuzzed-out guitar solos shift and weave through each of Outsideinside's nine tracks, but the guitars work best as rhythmic support of Peterson's vocals on the standout tracks "Just a Little Bit" and "Come and Get It." Unfortunately, Blue Cheer simply did not possess the virtuosity to fight through the record's more ambitious moments; when the San Francisco trio tries to cop Hendrix in "Sun Cycle," the music sputters and loses focus. In true metal tradition, critics have generally ignored Blue Cheer's vast musical influence except for the most derivative of bands. Meanwhile, artists like Smashing Pumpkins, Mudhoney, and the Melvins have consistently covered the group both live and in the studio. Anyone interested in the history of hard music will want to familiarize themselves with this exceptional, innovative release.

Biography-Not to be confused with the teen R&B performer whose name is spelled Cassie, Cassy (aka Catherine Britton) made her first recordings as a vocalist on Elin's Music Takes Me Higher EP in the late '90s. However, it was her project with producer/DJ Dave the Hustler that helped to propel her into the minimal techno spotlight. After collaborating on tracks with Perlon's Luciano and Mathew Jonson, she moved to Berlin in 2003 where she began to DJ with great frequency. She has since collaborated with minimal techno mainstays Ricardo Villalobos and Steve Bug on projects, started her own label, and released her debut solo EP on Perlon. Her first official mix CD, Panorama Bar 01, was released in August of 2006.

Biography-The Australian garage rock band Jet is comprised of Cameron Muncey (guitar/vocals), brothers Chris Cester (drums) and Nic Cester (guitar/vocals), and Mark Wilson (bass). Hailing from Melbourne and with dreams of making it big, the foursome formed just as the new millennium was beginning. They quickly self-released the Dirty Sweet EP in 2002. The vinyl-only album, which was limited to 1,000 pressings, was an instant hit down under. Once they pressed 1,000 more, Jet was being touted in the U.K. An American deal with Elektra surfaced in early 2003 and the Dirty Sweet EP was released domestically in May. An opening slot for the Rolling Stones in Jet's homeland soon followed. The band's proper studio full-length, Get Born, appeared in November. "Are You Gona Be My Girl?" became a radio favorite worldwide, pushing sales for Get Born near the four million mark. Jet also received seven ARIA (Australian Record Industry Association) nominations, and won six of those including single and album of the year. European dates with Oasis followed in summer 2005; Shine On, the band's second effort produced by Dave Sardy, arrived in fall 2006.

Review-There are two bands calling themselves Jet on this record. One is the Seventies-boogie-brained Australian quartet that made the 2003 corker Get Born. The other has spent much of the time in between opening for and hanging out with Oasis. I prefer the former, and that Jet doesn't show up - or at least turn it up, all the way - until five tracks into Shine On, with the hellbent-guitar and hammering-drums rush of "That's All Lies." That kind of charge keeps coming but only in fits and starts, between long stretches of booming balladry and acid-flavored big-guitar pop. The Oasis factor is all over the place. Dave Sardy, who produced that band's latest album, Don't Believe the Truth, does the honors here, and Jet's Beatlemania in "Bring It On Back" and the paisley-guitar chime of "Come On Come On" is a lot like Noel Gallagher's spin on the '68 John Lennon. There is a pleasant shock late in the album in "Eleanor," a lusty acoustic homage to the Everly Brothers. But Jet are at their best in the high power-riff gear of "Stand Up" and "Rip It Up" (not the Little Richard hit), with singer-guitarist Nic Chester barking and bawling like an improbable trinity of Liam Gallagher, Bon Scott and Axl Rose. When those songs take off, you fly.
