Review-Reviewed by Vaporsmagazine. He had me at “Hello,” literally. The moment I began listening to this album, suddenly, nothing else mattered. Rarely do we get such raw honesty and self reflection from artists, especially male artists, but Anthony Hamilton laid himself bare for us and you will love him even more because of it. Caught up in a world of complex melodies, deeply self reflective lyrics, Anthony openly explores his own personal insecurities through songs like “They Don’t know” and “Why,” while giving us a new spin on your typical love song with “Magnolia’s Room” and “Falling In Love Again.” However, listeners should not fear. Anthony still comes with those long sultry notes that take you straight back to your grandmothers front porch, sipping lemonade and lazily swatting flies, while reminding us of his Gospel Roots with songs like “Better Love” and “Please.” It seems like more and more artists are completely redefining themselves while leaving their audiences confused. Anthony did just enough reinvention to keep things fresh, but leaving enough of what works behind to keep things familiar. This album is one of those rare albums that you can let play from beginning to end, hitting repeat somewhere in the middle, just to keep the good feeling going and truly reminding you of what the term Southern Comfort is all about.
