The Detroit Cobras--Tried and True (2007)

Artist-The Detroit Cobras

Genre/Style-Garage Rock Revival

Biography-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Detroit_Cobras

Review-The Detroit Cobras have built an international reputation from mining their estimable record collection for raw and emphatic R&B tunes and giving them a hard, sweaty reinterpretation dominated by hard-edged guitars, but they've turned things down a few notches on their fourth album, Tied and True. Though Tied and True once again features the Cobras running through a baker's dozen of soulful chestnuts (and say what you will, but this band knows a great song when they hear one), the attack is more subtle this time out, and the more measured approach serves them well. The band still knows how to deliver the rock & roll goods, but guitarists Mary Ramirez and Greg Cartwright (the latter on loan from Reigning Sound) aim less for sonic overkill than giving vocalist Rachel Nagy a proper backdrop for her passionate, throaty vocals, and the results are more soulful and satisfying than what the band came up with on 2005's Baby. Similarly, drummer Kenny Tudrick doesn't shy away from the Big Beat, but also drives these arrangements with imagination that's less about bash and more about groove. Greg Cartwright didn't produce this set like he did on Baby, but his influence is clearly felt on this music, which boasts more of a Southern sense of rhythm and heart than the Detroit Cobras' earlier albums and recalls the rollicking but passionate tone of his best work with Reigning Sound. And Rachel Nagy is in great form on these sessions, filling these tunes with emotional energy while creating a sultry sense of mystery on the slower numbers. Folks looking for a re-creation of the Detroit Cobras' rowdy live shows might be thrown at first by Tied and True's more low-key attack, but the results are soul satisfying music that ranks with their best studio work to date.

09-28 London, England - Royal Albert Hall

Review-Yes, the Springsteen-nodding title of Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band is witty, but it's fitting, too: Newsom's Ys touring band backs her on this EP, and these three songs have a much more live feel than Van Dyke Parks, Jim O'Rourke and crew gave that magnificent album in the studio. With a song from Ys, a song from The Milk-Eyed Mender and a previously-unreleased track, Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band plays like the past, present and future of Newsom's music, all given an earthier, less precious feel that still displays how artful her music is. The EP kicks off with "Colleen," a prickly, feral-sounding new song that, with this arrangement anyway, feels brighter and more immediate than Ys' songs, albeit nearly as densely packed with words, melodies and ideas. "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie" channels the sunny, avant Appalachian feel of The Milk-Eyed Mender effortlessly; and in the EPs context, its relatively simple sweetness acts as a palate cleanser between the heavier fare of the more complex songs surrounding it. Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band closes with an epic, 13 minute-long version of Ys' final track "Cosmia"; opening with banjo, clarinets, harp, theremin, and accordion and closing with a string coda that keeps going and going, the song's will o' the wisp moods and movements are just as spellbinding here as they are on Ys, but more intimate and tangible. A beautiful minature of Newsom's work, Joanna Newsom and the Ys Street Band is a tour souvenir that all her fans can enjoy.

Hanson--The Walk (New!)

Artist-Hanson
Album-The Walk
Release Date-May 2007
Genre/Style-Pop/Rock Teen Pop
Size-95M
Quality-320kbps

Official Site-http://www.hanson.net
Biography-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanson_(band)

Review-Reviewed by Musicomh. Not quite so pretty and somewhat less squeaky than before, the '90s weirdest boy band, Hanson, are back again in their grown up incarnation, with another album of extremely pleasant pop/rock, The Walk.

Their career will always be overshadowed by their first release Mmmmbop, one of the most perfect pop singles ever released, and there's no getting around that. There's nothing that good here, but unlike previous offerings this is not a patchy album.

They seem to have come to terms with the fact that they are always going to produce smooth, mellow music and they can't run away from that. The Walk's single, unified sound mixes slightly slurred pop vocals, close harmonies and rock (not indie rock, not soft rock, not hard rock, just plain old rocking rock).
They find great form on the opener, Great Divide, with its South African choir and echoes of gospel hymns and Motown classics. Been There Before reminds me (God help me!) of Billy Joel. I would like to be able to add "back when he was good" but I am afraid I cannot. Perhaps the subject, a paean to the band's musical influences, bolsters this unwilling comparison given Joel's love of evoking nostalgic feelings in his audience. Even if it does sound like Billy Joel it works somehow - for a start it's very much more heartfelt than most of their love songs.

When trying to work out whether some music has longevity or is just something piquing my musical interest momentarily I tend to listen a few times then wait several days before writing about it. How much has stuck in my memory is usually a good indicator of what's stirring as opposed to simply pleasant. The first half of The Walk is still firmly embedded - not always for the right reasons, cf the whiney "Pleeeeese"s on Watch Over Me - but the memory fades as the album progresses.

I have bare bones recollections of the new single, Go (lots of mounting piano chords and tortured soul vocals - Take That should cover it, they'd have a massive hit), and very little after that. It's all nice, it's all good, but about 30 minutes in it becomes aural wallpaper until the upchange of gear for funky guitar of Something Going Round. The Walk ends with its title track, nasally plaintive, piano driven, with little bursts of snare drums far in the background to catch your attention.

This is certainly an album for people who don't like anything very extreme. Its soul and funk influences are very well filtered through clean white pop but in many ways Hanson are doing something most bands don't dare, producing solid music that is sometimes lovely without any quirks or gimmicks or musical twitches.

Biography-"Oliver Future is what the (Bristish) 80's often wished they could be. They have all the intense, sexy pomp of glam, with heavy but melodicguitars that feel composed rather than merely played. Combine these driving passions with impossibly hooky lyrics and rich production and you've got pure guitar gold." -Mike Meginnis, Splendid Ezine

"Best New Band in Austin"-Matt Dentler, Austin Chronicle

Formerly from Austin, now relocated to LA, Oliver Future have been playing kick ass shows in LA, NYC and most places in between. We play mostly The Viper Room and Spaceland and have played with quaint musical acts like Franz Ferdinand and The Arcade Fire, but sometimes play various parts each in Arthur Miller plays that we perform in our livingroom. We are looking for love... and rockets or a label but I know that's alot to ask for, so we'll just keep on myspace cuz it is far better than actually leaving the house! Thanks for visiting and hope you enjoy the tunes... they are free!

Biography-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilco

Review-Reviewed by Guardian.co.uk. It's been a while since the last offering from Jeff Tweedy and Co, but three years of slavering from fans is about to be rewarded with this seventh studio album. And, boy, was it worth the wait. Though Wilco are known as purveyors of alt country rock, Sky Blue Sky is an astounding demonstration of their ability to move between soulful acoustic folk, jazzy blues, country skank and pumping rock. Tweedy has the vocal range of three people, from country lilt to blues ache to folk sweetness - all this often in the space of one song. And what songs they are. 'You Are My Face' is a classic Wilco segue, as a sleepy Beatleseque ditty is suddenly interrupted with a jazz guitar explosion twinned with Tweedy's achy blues voice before returning seamlessly to piano tinkle and smooth vocals. There are stories of love lost and found, told with originality, humour and sweetness. 'How can I warn you my tongue turns to dust? Lack of disgust doesn't mean that I don't care. It means I'm partially there,' sings Tweedy on the delicately beautiful 'Please Be Patient With Me'. The instrumentation is a mini-rock opera in itself. Glorious riffs, thumping piano and virtuoso guitar solos from Nels Cline are orchestrated with skill, complementing the intricately composed and woven melodies. Simple and soothing, yet rich and rewarding, this is an album you unknowingly yearn for, like a cool hand on a hot forehead. A great album from a band in their prime.

The Clientele--God Save the Clientele (New!)

Album-God Save the Clientele

Genre/Style-Indie Pop
Size-50M
Quality-160kbps

Official Site-http://www.theclientele.co.uk/ and http://www.myspace.com/theclienteleofficial

Biography-The Clientele are a four piece who formed in Hampshire in 1997, with a sound combining the melody of 60s pop-psych heroes The Monkees, Love and The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and the later, magical strangeness of Felt, Television and Galaxie 500. They immediately set about releasing 7-inch singles through different labels in the UK, Spain, Japan and USA, compiling these to produce the cinematic, soft-focus beauty of their debut album "Suburban Light", released in 2000. The NME was quick to say that "those who like their art-pop espresso laced with gentle Surrealism will swoon to the sounds of the Clientele". But who cares what the NME thinks? This release saw them sign a deal with Merge Records in the USA, where they quickly gained a cult following.

The follow up, "The Violet Hour" was released two years later to rave reviews, described by Uncut Magazine as "one of the most magical pop albums of 2003". But the latest album "Strange Geometry" was their breakthrough in the USA and Europe, produced by Brian O'Shaughnessy (My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream), and with string arrangements by the legendary El records artiste Louis Philippe. At this point Hollywood began to take notice, and one of the loveliest songs from the record scores the opening scenes of the recent Keanu Reeves / Sandra Bullock weepie "The Lake House".

Sold out tours of the USA and Europe followed, along with UK support slots with Lambchop and the Brian Jonestown Massacre. The band have just returned from Nashville, Tennessee where they made a record with producer Mark Nevers (Candi Statton, Lambchop, Bonnie Prince Billy). They are currently previewing songs from this album, which will be entitled "God Save the Clientele" and promises to be their biggest and best yet. Prodigy--Return of the Mac (2007)

Artist-Prodigy
Album-Return of the Mac
Release Date-Mar 27, 2007
Genre/Style-East Coast Rap
Size-57M
Quality-256-320kbps

Official Site-http://www.myspace.com/mobbdeepprodigy
Biography-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prodigy_(rapper)

Review-As a member of the hardcore crew Mobb Deep, Prodigy lost some fans the minute they signed with 50 Cent's G-Unit, and their first full-length for the label, the merely fair Blood Money, didn't help in the least. Prodigy's solo album, Return of the Mac, is the return to form that follows with sinister beats, cold rhymes, and most importantly the Alchemist. The Mobb's long-time producer only handled one cut on Blood Money, but here he's in charge of every track. Steeped in history, the rapport between rapper and producer creates a world unto itself, one reflected in the album's artwork, where bravado style and the good life shine in a world of broken concrete and busted windows. The peering out the window could be searching for prey since Prodigy makes it quite clear his moneyed world has come at the expense of others. "Mac 10 Handle" takes a bit of the Geto Boys' "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me" and twists it into an N.Y.C. version of Scarface with Tony Montoya weary from all the glorious drugs and with his hand on the gun, paranoid as ever. "You've got different colors leaking out you/Like red, yellow, and white/You've got some stomach on your Nikes/You got blood on my G-Units" is the horror-show way "Take It to the Top" rolls, and everywhere else there are stories of decay, decline, death, and shoving your way to the front instead of waiting in line. Those bloodied and most definitely comped G-Unit clothes Prodigy mentions is one of the few times life with 50 is in the picture, and hip-hop gossip hounds will note that the label for his solo career is Koch, a "graveyard" according to 50. Whenever Prodigy works with the Alchemist, the results are so haunting it wouldn't be surprising if Mobb central was located in a graveyard, and even if this is familiar ground, an album so tight in theme and feel is refreshing in an era where most lyricists invite anybody and everybody. The album is short when compared to its contemporaries, clocking in at just under 40 minutes, and about five of those are spent on dialog and Alchemist loops. That's only a warning for those foolish enough to buy their music by the pound because Return of the Mac is admirable for being succinct and delivering on its title.

1997--A Better View of the Rising Moon (2007)

Artist-1997
Album-A Better View of the Rising Moon
Release Date-Apr 17, 2007
Genre/Style-Emo/Indie Rock
Size-64M
Quality-192kbps

Official Site-http://www.myspace.com/nineteenninetyseven

Biography-With stated influences like Mineral and the Promise Ring — and a name like 1997 — it's pretty obvious with which wave of emo the hearts of this Chicago quintet lie. Prior to forming the band in October 2005, members of 1997 had spent time in area outfits like Constance, Funeral Etiquette, and October Fall, but nothing felt quite right until everyone started jamming together in a suburban Lombard attic apartment with acoustic guitars and a keyboard. Vocalist Kevin Thomas, drummer Nick Coleman, guitarist Caleb Pepp, singer/keyboardist Kerri Mack, and bassist Alan Goffinski began writing and practicing for a few months before eventually playing out shows around town. The fresh-faced crew inevitably drew the attention of local indie powerhouse Victory Records and officially inked a deal with them only a year after forming. 1997's debut full-length, A Better View of the Rising Moon, followed in April 2007, by which time Alida Marroni had replaced Mack.

Youtube online videos-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3shzP8mAVgI

Review-According to the back of the album, the complete title to 1997's debut is "Since My House Burned Down I Now Own a Better View of the Rising Moon" and it's fitting for a record that retains a certain sense of bittersweet hope and optimism amid the usual quandaries of heartache felt and tears wiped away. This record is comforting, subtly uplifting, and made even more effective by the engaging interplay between vocalists Kerri Mack and Kevin Thomas. Their passion and poise are buoyed by a youthful enthusiasm unable to be dimmed even with lyrics of uncertainty; their voices bounce off one another, intertwining at some parts and always feeding off the other's energy. But strong voices wouldn't be so interesting without the rest of the band, and in that department, 1997 hardly slouches at all. They may be another product of Chicago's overflowing emo scene of the early 21st century, but they're hardly interchangeable with the rest of the Fall Out Boy spawn. 1997 love the emo that came right before those guys — Jimmy Eat World, Mineral, the Promise Ring — with a dash of Bob Dylan — yet instead of simply aping their influences, the quintet uses them to organically craft their own distinct indie rock melodies and sincere lyrics that come to life with bits of ukulele, piano, banjo and tambourine. The alternating dynamic of churning guitars and open-aired percussion that drive "Water's Edge" is a nice change of pace from the whole singing/screaming thing so many bands rely on to create movement. The Bright Eyes-esque "Tennessee Song" and harmonica-laden "The Roads You Can Take" navigate through more pastoral terrain and contain couplets like "It's true that we're young, but love is said to be ageless/The same is said of pain and desire and depression." Warm, engaging, creative and very fluidly pulled off, it's impressive how memorable this album is without even really realizing it at first, even more so considering 1997 has yet to be together even two whole years. Keep a close eye on this one; Victory Records seems to have really found a diamond in the rough.

CocoaMusic Rating-Recommended

Review-Reviewed by AMG. One thing is certain: Mary Chapin Carpenter has heard the sound of the new Nashville. She brings the electric guitars and she brings her Martin; she allows the mix to bring up those drums and basslines. She's no longer afraid of rock & roll as long as it blends with her brand of folkish country. After years of walking the outside, despite a hit record or two, seemingly afraid to really let it rip, she has arrived here, on The Calling. Oh yeah, yeah, that's a good thing; it may even be a great thing. Carpenter has always allowed her songwriting to take precedence over her recorded performances, and even though her album performances have sometimes been stellar, they've also been just a little too restrained. The title track that opens The Calling and "We're All Right" rock harder than anything she's ever cut. The beautiful thing is that with the bigger volume and the loosed electric six-strings, her big voice has more room and those killer hooks she writes don't disappear in the mix. They come off sounding like the anthems they should be. Carpenter has a hell of a way of looking at life from all sides, from behind the closed doors, from the empty lanes and the darkening countryside. She has always had a special way of looking at fate and destiny from the perch of those lives that hold on with only a shred of hope but refuse to give up or let go. That eagerness to survive in the face of all odds, or to affirm the essential goodness of a moment where one of her protagonists can simply breathe, has been her art. She does this better than most and is second to none in her picaresque narratives of the wish to be free, and of embracing freedom as an alternative to despair. And while the music has never matched the tautness of her lyrics, it does here. That doesn't mean the gentleness is all gone. On "Twilight" (a song James Taylor or Nanci Griffith should beg her to cover), the acoustic guitars, vibraphone, cajon (by Russ Kunkel, no less), and electrics blend gently but empathically. "On and On It Goes" is another ballad, loaded with emotion but delivered with the empathy of an old friend imparting a story. The huge drums on "It Must Have Happened" are, along with the title cut, sure bets for videos and singles. This cut just rocks in the way Sugarland rock, straight up, fat, with a message and enough heart to fill a Bruce Springsteen record. The refrain is utterly gorgeous. The jangling Rickenbackers on "Your Life Story" is another candidate for a single. The bottom line, as the album unfolds — whether it's "On with the Song," (written for the Dixie Chicks during their season in hell and an actual anthem), the sweet electric ballad "Why Shouldn't We," or the whispering closer "Bright Morning Star" — is that it never ceases not only to please, but to pull the listener deeper into Carpenter's wide-ranging poetic world. Time will tell, of course, but in The Calling, Carpenter may have her finest moment yet; it also feels like an artistic rebirth. These songs come from her marrow and the conviction she sings them with proves it. Carpenter and her co-producer Matt Rollings should be awfully proud of this one.

Review-Clay Walker didn't last long at RCA Records — just one album, 2003's A Few Questions, which found the Texan at his smoothest and poppiest, yet that didn't result in anything more than modest chart success. He parted ways with the label and signed with Curb, releasing Fall in the spring of 2007. Fall doesn't drastically depart from the sound of A Few Questions, but there's a crucial difference: it's produced by Keith Stegall, best known as the man who helmed hits by Alan Jackson. Stegall helps return some hard country to Walker's sound, but he does it with moderation, keeping Walker firmly within a mainstream, crossover sound. The subtle emphasis on pure country gives Fall a backbone A Few Questions lacked. Walker can still stray into sticky sentiment, particularly on ballads like "Love to Be Your Last," but these never get too saccharine (even if they remain awfully sappy at times) thanks to Stegall's simple, unadorned production. It also helps that these pieces of corn are surrounded by livelier material, whether it's the lean, good-hearted "Working Man," the cheerful, Kenny Chesney-styled beach anthem "Mexico," or especially the wry, funny lead single, "'Fore She Was Mama," where Walker discovers his mom's hidden hippie past. At times Fall does sound a bit too well-mannered, but part of Walker's charm as a veteran country singer is that he comes across as a gentleman: he may have fun in the sun, but he doesn't roam; he comes back home to the woman who loves him. The nice thing about Fall is that despite some treacly moments, it captures this character on record — and it places as much emphasis on the fun as it does the love, so it's his most enjoyable collection in some time.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shzJY3msrnA

Review-Walk Out finds Lady Saw devoting less of her album to sexually charged, aggressive music than usual and delivering a diverse effort in the style of her good friend and critical darling Tanya Stephens. Be warned, though, that she refuses to tone down her brazen "slack" tracks and earns her self-proclaimed title of "punany lyricist" with "Power of the Pum" and "Like It." These "pat-your-front woman" anthems are hard synthetic dancehall, authentically Jamaican, and unconcerned with crossing over, as is the celebratory, empowering, and trash-free highlight "Me and My Crew (The Rae)." Add the bitter "Chat to Mi Back" and you've got the usual exciting set of Lady Saw tunes, but Walk Out is a much more ambitious album. Over a smooth reggae beat, "No Less Than a Woman (Infertility)" addresses its issue head on, with Saw's own story of adoption and a sense of self-worth that's unquestionable. "I've still got so much love to give/To so much unwanted kids," she declares, and even offers "I would give anything to have a child of my own" in the same bold voice she uses when speaking of her bedroom talents. The ballad "Not the World's Prettiest" is as effective as TLC's similarly themed "Unpretty," while "You Need Me" skillfully deals with heartbreak and recalls her earlier hit "Give Me the Reason" with its fascinating country music influence. Stranger and riskier is the jaunty jazz of "Baby Dry Your Eyes," and just like everything else, it works. Coming to terms with X-rated and poignant moments living together is the listener's problem, since there's no sense that Saw sees any conflict. Just like early Prince albums, Walk Out is an exciting mix of shocking, intoxicating, daring, and sure.

CocoRosie--The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn (2007)

Review-It would be very easy for CocoRosie to make merely ornamental music and focus only on the pretty, ethereal sound that was so charming on La Maison de Mon Rêve. Fortunately, Sierra and Bianca Casady have more ambition than that, and they've managed to craft very different identities for each of their albums — no small feat, especially since their approach is so distinctive. On The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn, they combine the cleanest, most polished-sounding production to appear on a CocoRosie album with a stark hip-hop influence, making this the duo's most focused, and strangest, album yet. The sisters explore this polarity throughout The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn, opening the album with the bold, jaunty beats of "Rainbow Warriors" and following it with the much more delicate trip-hop of "Promise." Switching back and forth between mischievous, endearingly awkward moments and one of breathtaking beauty like day and night, or waking and dreaming, it's almost as if the album posits each of the Casadys' talents as opposing viewpoints. The tracks Bianca takes the lead on are bright and outrageous, like "Japan," which bounces along like the Mad Hatter's tea party as she sings, "Everybody wants to go to Iraq/But once you go there, you don't come back." The song's topsy-turvy feel only deepens when Sierra's eerie background vocals turn into a cheery trumpet melody. Meanwhile, "Black Poppies" and the other songs Sierra dominates delve even deeper into the narcotic chansons of La Maison de Mon Rêve and Noah's Ark. Her singing on The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn is her finest yet, especially on the middle-of-the-day lullaby "Sunshine" and "Miracle," where she has much more power and range than some of her previous kitten-ish Billie Holiday impersonations would suggest. The playful arrangements that are so vital to CocoRosie's sound come into sharper focus on this album, too, with a toy box's worth of sound effects adding poignancy and whimsy to "Animals" and harp and trumpet deepening "Raphael"'s mournful beauty. The Adventures of Ghosthorse and Stillborn's densely packed sounds and ideas are a lot to process, but they're what makes this album rewarding on repeated listens — and what makes CocoRosie's yin-yang, fractured fairy tale sound still surprising three albums into their career.

Joseph Arthur--Let's Just Be (2007)

Review-Now that he has his own studio and label, Joseph Arthur must feel a lot of freedom when it comes to recording material, and this newfound liberation is most certainly evidenced on Let's Just Be, his second release on Lonely Astronaut. The album has the feel of an improvisational session, as if Arthur called up his band late one night, asked them to bring their instruments, showed them the sketches of 16 songs he'd been working on, and then told them to play (the occasional spoken direction of "then we go into a verse" only helps this theory along). Now, Arthur is a talented enough writer that Let's Just Be doesn't exactly end in disaster, but there's an air of sloppy experimentation, of demos and B-sides and other things that probably won't interest more than the heartiest fan. That's not to say that there aren't some worthwhile tracks here — the sad and lovely "Take Me Home," the poetic "Chicago" — but unfortunately, these are few and far between the Mick Jagger-esque falsetto screeching, the cocky '70s-rock guitars, the repetitive lines of songs like "Shake It Off," "Diamond Ring," or "Let's Just Be." Arthur spends more of his time meandering around different riffs and rhymes (like in the excruciating "Lonely Astronaut," which clocks in at 20 minutes, at least a quarter of which is an acoustic guitar layered with emerging and disappearing instruments, the word "I" sung continuously on the fourth beat). Unlike another prolific writer, Ryan Adams, who at least had the good sense to limit the accessibility of his wanderings to his website, and for free, Arthur is packaging his as a legitimate album. This may be creatively beneficial for him, and it may be a necessary part of his composition process, but for those not involved, not only is it not enlightening, it's not particularly interesting, either.

Radiohead--Com Lag (2Plus2IsFive) (2004)

Artist-Radiohead
Album-Com Lag (2Plus2IsFive)
Release Date-Apr 13, 2004
Genre/Style-Experimental Rock
Size-50M
Quality-192kbps

Review-Useful only to the most devoted Radiohead followers (who will probably have most of the contents to begin with), Com Lag is a patchwork of live material, remixes, B-sides, and other assorted scraps. Naturally, the release isn't nearly as cohesive as Hail to the Thief; its apparent intent is to supply the fans with another stream of the band's recordings, regardless of both how they fit together and how mixed the tracks are to begin with. The B-sides aren't nearly as solid as the ones collected on the Airbag/How Am I Driving EP, not to mention most of the intervening extras that trickled out between that release and this one — though the live, solo piano version of Amnesiac-era B-side "Fog" is a definite standout, and the likes of "Paperbag Writer," "I Am Citizen Insane," and "Gagging Order" are hardly throwaways. A Cristian Vogel remix of "Myxomatosis" is far more nerve-racking than the original, full of clattering percussion; Thom Yorke's vocals are placed higher in the mix and possibly multi-tracked to make them sound as if they're on the brink of lunacy. Another standout is a ferocious live version of "2+2=5" recorded at London's Earls Court. To make the release a little more enticing, no expense was spared with the packaging.

Limbeck--Limbeck (2007)

Artist-Limbeck
Album-Limbeck
Release Date-Apr 10, 2007
Genre/Style-Indie Rock/Alternative Country rock
Size-51M
Quality-192-320kbps

Official Site-http://www.limbeck.net/ and http://www.myspace.com/limbeck
Biography-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limbeck

Review-It's really hard to not like a band like Limbeck, especially when they're releasing albums like this self-titled one that is full of warm, jangly and sun-soaked, countrified pop that is equal parts Beach Boys, Wilco and Tom Petty. Tender vocal harmonies and an innocent, hungry sort of charm drive the songs, which further own the perfect amount of fullness thanks to bits of organ, brass and string littered throughout. The album is a relaxed affair that's missing the stubble-faced grit that makes most country-flavored indie bands perfect for hovering over a bar counter all night throwing back shots of whiskey — see the gentle percussive stomp of "Bird Problems" and the interstate longing of "Let Me Come Home" — but what is lacking in the area of drunken misery, Limbeck makes up for in buoyant and welcoming tunes perfect for those moments when life isn't just a mess. This is for road trips with friends (preferably driving through some arid desert with miles and miles between each broken down rest stop), walking down the street on a summer day with the sun beating down on your face, or those moments when the most immediate concern is that "the wind keeps blowing the dust in my face and rearranging my hairdo." The restless energy of cuts like "Keepin' Busy" and "Wake Up" break up the largely mellow album nicely, though it's really songs like the early morning narrative of "Sunset Limited" that shine. These dusty accounts are little snapshots of life on the road that aren't without uncertainty, killing time alone, and broken hearts and cars, but are ultimately about the friends, family and people you meet along the way that make it all worthwhile. At one point, lead vocalist Robb MacLean sings, "I just want to be content no matter where I am." Well as long as this album is playing on the stereo, you're halfway there.

Kevin Devine--Put Your Ghost to Rest (2006)

Artist-Kevin Devine
Album-Put Your Ghost to Rest
Release Date-Oct 17, 2006
Genre/Style-Alternative Singer/Songwriter Indie Rock
Size-115M

Official Site-http://www.kevindevine.net/blog.aspx and http://www.myspace.com/kevindevine
Biography-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Devine

Review-As part of Capitol Records' re-emergence as an alt rock label after years of near-neglect by EMI in favor of the younger, hipper Virgin imprint, Kevin Devine's major-label debut was released nearly simultaneously with the Decemberists' The Crane Wife. But where that album found Colin Meloy and crew expanding their sound into commercially dubious arenas like '70s prog rock and Fairport Convention-style folk, Put Your Ghost to Rest sounds deliberately intended to pull Devine from the indie folk ghetto onto AAA radio alongside the likes of KT Tunstall and John Mayer. Opening track "Brooklyn Boy" is built on the same intimate, acoustic guitar and voice combo as Devine's solo records, but producer Rob Schnapf adds strings, piano and other elements to flesh out the sound in a manner more conducive to radio play. Undoubtedly chosen on account of his work on Elliott Smith's XO and Figure 8 — the albums Smith made in exactly the same career circumstances as Devine, who's an admitted disciple of the late singer/songwriter — Schnapf does pretty much exactly the same for Devine as he had for Smith. While the richer arrangements and extra production gloss are neither intrusive nor inappropriate, it's clear that Put Your Ghost to Rest is meant as Devine's commercial breakout. For the most part, however, Devine sticks to what he does best: emotional lyrics set to gentle, folk-rock influenced tunes; the main exception, "Go Haunt Someone Else," is one of the album's bright spots, a playful bit of neo-psychedelia similar to Michael Penn's more overtly '60s-influenced work. Perhaps too low-key to fully grab the mainstream, Put Your Ghost to Rest at the very least won't offend Devine's indie audience.

The Twilight Sad--Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters (New!)

Artist-The Twilight Sad
Album-Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters

Review-The Twilight Sad are one of the more conventional-sounding bands on Fat Cat — that is, if cathartic, widescreen rock augmented by accordions and melodies rooted in Scottish folk can be called conventional. Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters expands on the searing, earnest sound of the band's self-titled EP; indeed, several of the Twilight Sad's best songs are also highlights here. "That Summer, at Home I Became the Invisible Boy" just might be the band's definitive song: guitars shimmer and build up into poetic squalls; James Graham's appealingly thick Scottish burr imbues lyrics like "Kids are on fire in the bedroom" with tenderness; Mark Devine's powerful but nuanced drumming cuts a swath through the melody but doesn't overpower it; and accordions add an unexpected, homespun warmth. "And She Would Darken the Melody" is another standout that underscores the similarity between the Twilight Sad's sound and the luminously anthemic side of the Walkmen or Interpol. However, the Twilight Sad have a more free-flowing approach than either of those bands, especially on the stunning "Talking with Fireworks/Here, It Never Snowed," which comes in like a lion with torrents of drums and guitars, and goes out like a lamb with a sparkling, hypnotic guitar melody. "Last Year's Rain Didn't Fall So Hard" is a gorgeous glimpse of a song that fades in and out, suggesting that it goes on forever, a feeling echoed by the instrumental title track, which closes the album with more of the wonderful atmosphere that makes the rest of Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters accessible, but ultimately far from conventional. The density of the Twilight Sad's sound evokes wide open spaces, yet the louder they are, the more intimate they sound — these kinds of paradoxes make this album a powerful debut.

Biography-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shearwater_(band)

Review-It's impossible to have predicted what a large shadow Jeff Buckley would have cast over rock music after his tragic 1997 passing. But as evidenced by a multitude of early 21st century Buckley disciples, all it took was a single album for Buckley to leave his mark on popular music. This is especially evident on Shearwater's 2006 release Palo Santo. The group's third full-length overall sees singer/multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Meiburg assume full control of the band, as he pens all of the album's 11 tunes solely on his own. While listening to the album-opening "La Dame et la Licorne" or "White Waves," it's impossible not to automatically think of Buckley — Meiburg's vocals are a dead ringer for the deceased singer/guitarist. Elsewhere, the album's title track sounds like Jeff's pop, Tim Buckley, while Meiburg gets to show his quirky side on such selections as "Red Sea, Black Sea" and "Johnny Viola." While it may not be as plagiaristic as a band like Ours is, it's plain to see Meiburg's chief musical influence throughout much of Palo Santo.

Radical Face--Ghost (2007)

Release Date-Mar 20, 2007

Size-65M
Quality-192kbps

Official Site-http://www.radicalface.com/ and http://www.myspace.com/radicalface
Biography-http://www.radicalface.com/radicalface.html

Review-Ben Cooper has a few names he works under; as Radical Face, he creates an album that's possibly one of the best debut takes on whatever the word Americana is supposed to represent in the 21st century. But instead of dour re-creations of music that even Uncle Tupelo would have rejected, Ghost is something that lives up to its name — a strange, murky presence that sometimes is not entirely there, but in the best, most suggestive way. Cooper's singing is understated but sweetly calming, a gentle glaze that recalls the not-quite-shoegaze of many early-'90s U.S. acts that rejected grunge and lo-fi for another approach. Meanwhile, the music is equally cool but hardly cold, a carefully detailed combination of instrumentation that lightly references everything from late-'60s Beach Boys to late-'90s Mogwai in its cinematic scope — banjos sit well against building drums, strings suddenly appear to add piercing emphasis, and there's a definite hint here and there of Dave Fridmann's full-on widescreen production style on songs like "Glory." Yet even more strikingly, there's a real joy that suffuses much of the record, as can be heard on the chorus of "Welcome Home." After so much post-Polyphonic Spree "uplifting" chorale hash infesting NPR-ized rock & roll, the gentle but still exultant beauty here is something special, a blend of vocals, banjo, handclaps and piano that sounds all the better for being a carefully arranged collage. The album's downside is a certain sameness in sound that gets the better of it toward the end — some songs like "Along the Road" would almost work better separately than in context as a result — but Ghost is a promising start for Cooper's latest incarnation.

Martina McBride--Waking Up Laughing (2007)

Genre/Style-Contemporary Country
Size-55M

Biography-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_McBride

Youtube online videos-http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FdB5Adws78

Review-Martina McBride scored big with Timeless, her collection of classic country tunes in 2005. It was yet another feather in the singer's cap. McBride's reign near the top of country music's pantheon has been near constant. She's picky about the songs she chooses to sing, she works with sympathetic producers, and her voice is, well, timeless. She's got the Southern twang, but its timbre carries within it a vast scope of American music. Check "Anyway," the first single and video from 2007's Waking Up Laughing, and one of two tunes on the set McBride had a hand in writing (and she produced the set herself — she's earned the right). It's subject is to pray regardless, take the action and leave the result in the hands of Divine Providence: "God is great, but sometimes life ain't good/When I pray it doesn't always turn out like I think it should/But I do it anyway/I do it anyway." It's anthem to the beauty of failure, the courage in tenacity, and a testament to the willingness to do the right thing no matter how it turns out. It's got a massive string section, a slow, pronounced piano. The guitars crash against the strings in the refrain and the entire thing nearly lifts off the ground. The only thing holding it steady is McBride's big contralto. This kind of drama is her stock-in-trade. Celine Dion has nothing on her. Song itself is where McBride's quest as an artist resides. In the opener, "If I Had Your Name," rocking guitars, fiddles, mandolins, and big bad drums underscore McBride's scathing indictment of another's character flaws: "If I had your name/I'd be changin' it by now." A popping bassline and twin lead guitars fill the middle with menace and rage. "Everybody Does" feels like a flip side for "Anyway," with the subject of failure in love. "Loveland" and "House of a Thousand Dreams" have less of that large, theater-sounding dynamic. They are more traditionally "country" songs, a term that in the 21st century can mean almost anything — and yes, that's good: it simply stands for American music these days. Waking Up Laughing is another brick in Martina McBride's astonishingly consistent catalog. Her continual affirmation for Christian faith may alienate some but will no doubt register with many country fans. Any way you look at it, Waking Up Laughing is a winner.

Review-With each album since Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons, Blonde Redhead has made huge strides forward with their sound. Misery Is a Butterfly pitted fragile melodies against dark, swirling arrangements, and its tragic glamour turned the album into a cult favorite. On 23, the band trades the cloistered chamber rock of Butterfly for tone-bending dream pop and subtle electronics; while the wide open spaces sound a little bare at first, this streamlined approach ends up making this Blonde Redhead's loveliest and most accessible work yet. The group begins each album with a bold statement of purpose, and 23 is no different. The epic title track's delicate electronic rhythms, swooping, shimmering guitars, and majestically bittersweet melody pitch it somewhere between My Bloody Valentine and Asobi Seksu, showing how a more restrained Blonde Redhead can still sound lush and haunting. "Spring and Summer by Fall"'s streaming, comet-tail guitars and "Silently"'s thorny melody hark back to Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons, while "Heroine"'s vocoders sound surprisingly fresh, giving the song a fairy tale-meets-sci-fi vibe. This more whimsical, if not exactly lighthearted, feel flows through much of 23, especially on "Dr. Strangeluv," which boasts playful percussion and sparkling synths, and "Top Ranking," which layers Kazu Makino's vocals into futuristic girl group harmonies. However, Blonde Redhead hasn't ditched the brooding beauty of Misery Is a Butterfly entirely. "The Dress" is just as darkly stunning as any song on that album, with looping gasps and insistent guitars circling lyrics like "the fear starts creeping up when you have so much to lose," while "SW"'s melody and psychedelic brass interlude have a Butterfly-esque intensity. And as always, Blonde Redhead has a flair for haunting melodies, particularly on "Publisher," the chorus of which sounds peculiarly like Aerosmith's "Dream On." 23 is stunning — in fact, its only flaw might be that its track listing is a little top-heavy, resulting in an album with an amazing first half and a flip side that is only very good. Nitpicking aside, 23 is mysterious and modern, with an artfully strange beauty that is more memorable than perfection.

Review-The first full-length by Brooklyn's all-girl Au Revoir Simone enchants in a way the trio itself once captured best: the music is the perfect soundtrack to "exploring a secret garden at night with a flashlight," as they told British Vogue in 2006. Though that description made its way to newsstands before this album took shape — the girls were discussing earlier tracks and sessions — it holds: The Bird of Music presents dreamy, image-mad synth pop with a sparkly magic quality; it's the perfect album for contemplating unicorns to. Vocally, there's a sweetness to the songs that's nicely tempered by honesty — when Au Revoir Simone sing "You make me wanna measure stars in the backyard with a calculator and a ruler, baby," on the infectious "Stars," for instance, you believe them, even if you find the idea a little odd. Musically, they make a mountain of sound out of three keyboards and a drum machine, but it's a mountain of sound you'd never attach the word "quirky" to. Au Revoir Simone are serious if highly idiosyncratic musicians. Their album should find favor with listeners who love Stereolab and the Waitresses but don't mind a little Bananarama thrown in the mix, either.

Review-After the epic proportions of Abattoir Blues/The Lyre of Orpheus double-disc in which Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds laid out two sides of the songwriter's melodic and ambitious look at both rock & roll and balladry, Grinderman sounds like a wild, nasty, wooly rock & roll monolith who simply need to let it rip and then see what happens. Along with Warren Ellis, Martyn P. Casey and Jim Sclavunos (right, 3/7 of the Bad Seeds),Cave and company turn in a squalling, raucous, twist-and-turn garage band set that takes on all comers. Check out the opening line of the single "No Pussy Blues" for clues as to why the songwriting screenwriter (and seriously B-grade actor) may be doing this — the sounds of a typewriter plunking only to be joined by a Sclavunos' hi hat before Cave prattles in spoken word with real menace: "My face is finished, my body's gone, and I can't help thinking but think standing up here with all this applause and gazing down at all the young and beautiful with looking up with their questioning eyes/That I must above all things love myself..." Joined by a snarling bass, he goes on to try to woo some young woman in the crowd with all his tricks, from sucking in his gut and getting all togged up to quoting her Yeats to doing her dishes and sending her doves, but he is rejected. The wail of age is fraught with both danger and delight as he continues his desperate and unsuccessful attempt at seduction, but all he ends up with is the "no pussy blues." It adds up to two things: black humor and a love for the kind of rock & roll younger musicians have to plot, plan, pose and dig deep into their record collections to try and emulate. When the band jumps in with all the racket unleashed, the track is as tragically funny as it is unhinged. The singer's frustration is understood and empathized with to the point of sheer vitriol. And it's a careening jolt of rock & roll that would send his listeners to the volume control for more. The opening track "Get It On" is similar but even wilder: it comes bursting out of the box like a rabid wolf. Even on the slower tunes such as "Electric Alice," a story-song, the grimy organ sounds and Ellis' distorted bouzouki and violin meet the slippery mud shuffle of Sclavunos' drums and Casey's plodding, droning bassline. All of this said, there are moments here, such as on "Depth Charge Ethel" and "Honey Bee (Let's Fly to Mars") where Grinderman are so freaking awesome they transcend the garage band thing altogether and sound like some flipped-out cross between Suicide, the Stooges, Bo Diddley and the Scientists. The songs come through and stand on their own amid the noise, so don't be surprised if some of these evil little nuggets get new treatments when the Bad Seeds reconvene. While the sound of pure snarl and glee is what melts the speaker cabinets the most, the overdriven menace of most these songs doesn't undermine their worth as songs. Cave is far too gifted for that and his bandmates are too empathetic to let him veer too far off course. The album closes with "Love Bomb," with Cave railing on electric guitar. It's a pumping anthem of pure male libidinal dis-ease that takes the sentiments of "No Pussy Blues" to the extreme, though Bob Dylan could have written the words. It's an anthem of male malaise, dysfunction, the rage at emasculation and desire. In fact, the protagonist in most of these songs is literally sick with it, and so is almost all of the music itself here. Grinderman, not the Bad Seeds, are the most logical — though not necessarily similar-sounding or serious — extension of the Birthday Party legacy Cave left behind 25 years ago. These are songs to chew on, get knocked down by, guffaw at, and take deep inside your own shadow side to celebrate. Grinderman is the impure rock & roll album to beat in 2007.

Review-Call him pretentious, call him sensitive, call him what you will, but there's no denying the fact that Conor Oberst is a talented and intelligent songwriter. Actually, it's probably more correct to say that Bright Eyes are a group of talented and intelligent songwriters, because it's the pedal steel, the clamorous percussion, the orchestral arrangements, the thick background vocals that add to the songs in Cassadaga — the band's fullest and most developed record to date — almost as much as the lead singer's own wobbly voice and sharp lyrics. Because the album is, like all of Bright Eyes' albums, very much about the words. Besides the usual swatch of Middle America character sketches and the occasional political allusions, Oberst writes dialogue that travels throughout the record, questioning religion and truth and love and purpose the entire time. He knows he has to go somewhere, and he's hoping that if he just keeps moving, where exactly that is will make itself clear. "Cassadaga might be just a premonition of a place you're going to visit," a psychic says to him in the opener, "Clairaudients (Kill or Be Killed)," which acts an introduction to both the album's musical (slightly spacey, organic acoustic melodies) and lyrical (direction, control) themes. Oberst sees himself in a place where "everything must belong somewhere" and "death may come invisible," a place where mystics and clairvoyants can tell us as much about our own selves as we can, a place where destiny exists, a place where God is both an omnipotent "Brakeman" and a myth construed in books. Perhaps because of this, Oberst appears more unsure than he ever has. But also because of this, this lack of control, it's not an insecurity about himself that he feels, but rather a kind of shadowy acceptance of the uncertainty of life. "The 'I don't know,' the 'maybe so'/Is the only real reply," which he sings on the stormy Western dirge "Middleman," his voice accepting and empty at the same time, is the most truthful assurance he can offer. Because, despite the gravity of the ideas presented on Cassadaga, it's not a depressing or even overly serious album. Rather, it's finding what you can, be it a geographic location or a mind state, when and how you can, amid the incomprehensible world around you; it's Americana, full of folky acoustic guitars and dobro and dissent and yet, still, a kind of hopeful optimism that can't hide itself completely under the strings, clarinets, and cynical irony; it's a mature interpretation of life, not just whining complaints. "I'm leaving this place but there's nothing I'm planning to take/Just you," Oberst confesses on "No One Would Riot for Less." Where he's going — Manhattan, California, the Hague, New England, or even Cassadaga itself — he doesn't know, but he's going to keep looking until he finds it, and he's got his guitar, his simple chords, his verses and choruses, to help him (and perhaps us) along.
