Katatonia--The Great Cold Distance (New and Recommended)

Artist:Katatonia
Album:The Great Cold Distance
Release Date:Apr 4, 2006
Genre/Style:Heavy Metal/Scandinavian Metal

Tracks:1. Leaders 2. Deliberations 3. Soil's Song 4. My Twin 5. Consternation 6. Follower 7. Rusted 8. Increase 9. July 10. In The White 11. The Itch 12. Journey Through Pressure

Review:by Stewart Mason Coming three full years after 2003's Viva Emptiness, The Great Cold Distance continues the trend toward the mainstream that Katatonia began with that album. Singer Jonas Renske — who apparently lost his ability to do the now-clichéd Cookie Monster vocals some years ago due to medical problems — has refined his voice into a much smoother and, surprisingly, more powerful instrument that's capable of greater emotional shadings. Similarly, this album forsakes the blastbeats and hyperspeed riffing for a more dynamic sound that makes smart use of slow and quiet passages. They're still heavy: "Deliberation" and "Leaders" are as brutal as anything on the band's career high point, Last Fair Deal Gone Down. But that heaviness is set off by gems like the surprisingly restrained "In the White," a powerful and heartfelt song that's among the band's finest, and that sonic variety makes The Great Cold Distance a stronger, more compelling listen than a more bludgeoning effort would be.

Review:by Thom Owens Folkways Years (1945-1959) is a wonderful 17-track compilation of Brownie McGhee's Folkways recordings. During this time, McGhee became a staple on the blues-folk revival circuit, and accordingly these recordings find the Piedmont bluesman playing in a folk style, which he excelled at. Many of the most powerful tracks are straight from the rural Piedmont tradition, but the folkier material shows what a rich musician he was. It's an excellent sampler, one that demonstrates the depth and breadth of his Folkways recordings.

Peter Tosh--Legalize It (Recommended)

Artist:Peter Tosh
Album:Legalize It
Release Date:1976
Label:Columbia
Genre/Style:Political Reggae/Roots Reggae

Tracks:01. Legalize It02. Burial03. Whatcha Gonna Do04. No Sympathy05. Why Must I Cry06. Igziabeher (Let Jah Be Praised)07. Ketchy Shuby08. Till Your Well Runs Dry09. Brand New Second Hand

Review:by Vik Iyengar After years of being overshadowed by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh left the Wailers to pursue a solo career. Released in 1976, Legalize It is a bold statement that Peter Tosh had arrived and was a creative force in his own right. Although he explores some issues of spirituality, this is Tosh's most lightweight album in the sense that it is his least political. This is not meant as a criticism — in fact, Tosh's playfulness and joy ("Ketchy Shuby") only add to the album's charm. He does make political statements (the title track celebrates and promotes the use of marijuana), but they are done with a sense of humor and a melodic infectiousness that belie his sincere concern for the issues. Tosh incorporates many instruments and mixes slower ballads with upbeat grooving tunes. The album's highlight is "Why Must I Cry," a multi-layered song (co-written with Bob Marley) that conveys a sense of personal failure when fighting an uphill battle, whether it be against injustices of the world or within the confines of a relationship. Legalize It cemented Tosh's position as a giant in reggae, and the album is one of the best albums of the genre.

Regina Belle--Lazy Afternoon (Recommended)

Artist:Regina Belle
Album:Lazy Afternoon
Release Date:Jul 13, 2004
Label:Peak
Genre/Style:Contemporary R&B/Adult Contemporary

Tracks:01. Lazy Afternoon (From The Golden Apple) [5:21] 02. Fly Me to the Moon [5:24] 03. What Are You Afraid Of [4:49] 04. If I Ruled the World (From Pickwick) [4:36] 05. Corcovado [5:56] 06. There's a Love [4:05] 07. Why Do People Fall in Love [4:53] 08. For The Love Of You [5:26] 09. If I Should Love You [4:34] 10. Moanin' [5:51] 11. The Man I Love [5:19] 12. Try a Little Tenderness [6:19]

Review:by Scott Yanow Regina Belle is a superior R&B/soul singer with a strong voice, a subtle style (although she can go over the top when it fits the music), and a solid sense of swing and dynamics. What is particularly unusual about this set for the Concord pop subsidiary Peak is the repertoire. Over half of the songs are jazz standards, and it is a particular treat hearing Belle's soulful renditions of such songs as "Lazy Afternoon," "Corcovado," "Moanin'," and "The Man I Love." The music is not really jazz (although it hints at it), but the jazz tunes give Belle an opportunity to stretch both herself and the format a bit. George Duke is a major asset as both a producer and a keyboardist, Everette Harp takes a few tenor and alto solos, and the Perry Sisters contribute some powerful background vocals on half of the tracks.

The Essex Green--Cannibal Sea (New and Recommended)

Artist:The Essex Green
Album:Cannibal Sea
Release Date:Mar 21, 2006
Label:Merge
Genre/Style:Neo-Psychedelia/Chamber Pop/Indie Pop

Tracks:1. This Isnt Farm Life 2. Dont Know Why (You Stay) 3. Penny & Jack 4. Snakes In The Grass 5. Rue De Lis 6. Cardinal Points 7. Rabbit 8. Uniform 9. Pride, The 10. Sin City 11. Elsinore 12. Slope Song

Site:http://www.essexgreen.com/
Review:by Tim Sendra The Essex Green's previous album was a marvelous fusion of their psychedelic pop, soft rock, folk, and indie pop influences, much like a fusion of the Ladybug Transistor and the Sixth Great Lake (not surprising since the three principals in the band also play in those two groups). Released in 2006, Cannibal Sea is a continuation of that sound with the added ingredient of better songs, higher production values, and Final Four-worthy performances. Not that they have been weak in those departments in the past, but now they seem to have hit upon a seam of pure gold. From the opening one-two-three punch of the rollicking and lush "This Isn't Farmlife," the power pop rocker "Don't Know Why (You Stay)," and the melancholy heartbreak-in-the-city ballad "Penny & Jack," which features the two voices of the Green, the lovely Sasha Bell and the just as lovely Christopher Ziter, trading verses and harmonizing like seraphim on the choruses, there isn't a weak song to be found. And they sound magnificent, too, as the bandmembers seemingly brought all their musical and arrangement skills and ideas to the sessions and they, along with producer Britt Myers, know exactly what each song needs. Some, like "Snakes in the Grass" and the shimmering ballad "Sin City," are bolstered with enough percussion, background vocals, vintage keys, horns, strings, and reverb to make Phil Spector raise his guns in tribute; some, like "Rue de Lis" and "Rabbit," are stripped down and brilliantly arranged. From beginning to end, it feels like there is just an added amount of conviction and excitement from the group on Cannibal Sea — more soul and more dedication. In particular, Bell has stepped up her game; her vocals are perfect throughout and the chorus on "Snakes in the Grass" is guaranteed to cause four out of every five indie kids who hear it to fall instantly in love. Both she, Ziter and third member of the trio Jeff Baron have become first-class songwriters and the Essex Green definitely sound like a real band now and not a side project. In fact, Cannibal Sea is the equal of anything the Ladybug Transistor have released (which is saying a whole lot), and is better than just about any indie pop or rock circa 2006.

I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness--Fear Is On Our Side (New)

Review:by Greg Prato In the early 21st century, all it took was some retro '80 designer threads to be considered "new wave revivalists." And like any rock music movement, there are always going to be artists that get by due to a keen fashion sense (which strangely, are usually the acts that conquer the charts), while others actually have something to say musically. The Texas quintet I Love You But I Have Chosen Darkness is of the latter variety — debuting in 2003 with a self-titled EP, and finally returning in 2006 with the full-length, Fear Is on Our Side. If they wanted it, this group certainly could milk their new wave cred, as longtime Ministry member (yes, Ministry was a electro/dance/new wave band before going industrial metal) Paul Barker produced the album, which may also explain why the band sound somewhat similar at times to Barker's pre-Ministry band, Blackouts. Just about any of the album's selections would have fit perfectly on a vintage 120 Minutes episode, including the album-opening "The Ghost" and "The Owl," both of which are very similar musically to Joy Division. Upon first listen of "Fears Is on Our Side," it's quite understandable to assume that I Love You But I Have Chosen Darkness hails from some U.K. town like Manchester — certainly not a steer-and-cowboy-heavy U.S. locale.

Carey launches a summer tour (Sean Paul will open shows for her)

Hot again, Carey launches a summer tour

By Elysa Gardner, USA TODAY

Now that Mimi has gotten her act together, she's taking it on the road. Having re-established herself at the top of the pop heap last year with her six-times-platinum The Emancipation of Mimi, Mariah Carey is launching her first U.S. tour since 2003.

Called The Adventures of Mimi, it will kick off Aug. 5 in Miami and take the star to more than 30 cities. (Sean Paul will open a number of shows.)

"I've always associated going to a show with summer, and the sense of freedom that evokes," Carey says. "Summertime is the best time for tours, I think. Not that I'm the queen of touring."

The singer has indeed hardly been a constant fixture on the concert circuit. She says, "I need a day and a half of complete vocal rest between shows," which makes tour logistics tricky.

Before recording Emancipation, Carey "was on tour for a while, taking two days off between shows, which left me in a great place vocally. And now, because I'm at a really good place in my life and career, I want to document it."

Carey will, in fact, be filming the journey, for which she'll even use a tour bus. "I had a small one in Europe, but I didn't sleep on it or anything. Someone, I won't say who, told me, 'The bathroom may be a little small for you.' "

Though she jokes about "my reputation as a diva," Carey is keen that her Adventures bring her closer to the audience.

"I know that my fans already understand who I am. Sometimes I think they get me more than I get myself. But I want everyone who sees these shows to get a better understanding of me, my personal side, by the time they leave."

To that end, the star will mix hits from Emancipation and previous albums with deeper cuts.

"There's a song Close My Eyes from Butterfly, and girls have told me that it helped save their lives after abusive childhoods and relationships. I want there to be intimate moments — not a woe-is-me thing, but a chance for people to recognize that we've all been through things, and we can connect through music."

She won't disappoint the faithful. "I know people want to hear certain songs, and would be disappointed if I sang, say, Vision of Love and didn't give it my all — no pun intended, because My All will also be on the set list."

And don't be surprised if some of Carey's hip-hop collaborators show up as special guests.

"It depends on who's in town and available, but there are artists I have enough of a relationship with — Jermaine Dupri, Busta Rhymes. When I'm in L.A., maybe Snoop will be around."

Bic Runga--Birds (Recommended)

Biography:by Jason Ankeny & Joslyn Layne A superstar in her native New Zealand while still in her teens, singer/songwriter Bic Runga was born in Christchurch in 1976; the product of a musical family — her mother was a Malaysian nightclub performer during the 1960s — she began playing the drums at the age of 11, and within a few years was also singing with local jazz groups. Upon learning guitar and keyboards, Runga began composing her first songs, and in 1994 she relocated to Auckland to pursue a professional music career. In 1995, aged 19, she made her Sony label debut with the single "Drive," which rocketed into the Top Ten on the New Zealand pop charts and garnered her the prestigious 1996 Silver Scroll award, an honor given for excellence in songwriting. After touring in support of Neil and Tim Finn, Runga issued a follow-up single, "Bursting Through," followed in 1997 by the Top Ten smash "Sway." Her self-produced debut LP Drive appeared later that same year and garnered New Zealand's top music awards. In the late '90s, Bic Runga spent some time based in New York City, where she began writing songs for her follow-up album. She continued to work on new songs after returning to New Zealand, and embarked on a NZ tour with Tim Finn and Dave Dobbyn in August and September 2000, resulting in the 2001 release Together in Concert: Live. Runga's Beautiful Collision hit stores in 2002; it was released internationally, and went 4x platinum in New Zealand, inspiring a re-release with a bonus disc the following year. 2003 also saw Runga found the record label Nu Shoo before kicking off another tour. Islands--Return to the Sea (Recommended)

Artist:Islands
Album:Return to the Sea
Release Date:Apr 4, 2006
Label:Equator
Genre/Style: Indie Pop/Indie Rock

Tracks:1. Swan (Life After Death) 2. Humans 3. Don't Call Me Whitney, Bobby 4. Rough Gem 5. Tsuxiit 6. Where There's A Will, There's a Whalebone 7. Joggin Gorgeous Summer 8. Volcanoes 9. If 10. Ones 11.untitled bonus track

Biography:by Tim Sendra On their debut record, Return to the Sea, Montreal's Islands have crafted a rich, exciting, and emotionally deep sounding album that carries on the freewheeling spirit and sound of the Unicorns as well as that of the Elephant 6 bands of the late '90s. You see, Islands singer/guitarist/songwriter/producer Nick Diamonds and drummer Jaime were members of the Unicorns and they have taken the strengths of that band, amplified and adjusted them, added a few more vital ingredients, and come up with a disc that satisfies on a variety of levels and rates among the best indie rock around. The Unicorns were a lo-fi, experimental car crash of a band, equal parts whimsy and exuberance; Islands are a much more adult and measured experience with a much cleaner sound and more classic arrangements (lots of strings, accordions, standup bass, and pianos to go with the cheap synthesizers). Diamonds' voice is much less whimsical; he has scaled back on the Coyne meter from nine to around five and now conveys his slightly off-kilter lyrics with more emotion and honesty. Despite the changes, the group hasn't lost any of the sunshine-addled spark that the Unicorns had, as songs like the whirling "Don't Call Me Whitney, Bobby" or "Jogging Gorgeous Summer" (which comes kitted out with steel drums and recorder!) clearly demonstrate. The trippy "Volcanoes" (nice rock snob reference to the Troggs tapes in the lyrics), the indie psych/hip-hop mash-up featuring the rhyme skills of Subtitle and Busdriver, or the epic-length psychedelic singalong that opens the record so nicely ("Swans [Life After Death]") show that the band hasn't lost their ambition, either. "Ones" itself has more big-hearted ambition and dramatic power than most bands could dream of unleashing. The lovely instrumental "Tsuxiit" or the sweetly pop-rocking "Rough Gem" sound like the work of another band entirely, and indeed all of these comparisons to the Unicorns are ultimately irrelevant. It's not like you have to be a fan of that band to fall in love with this one. All you need is an indie pop heart and two functioning ears. A love of melodies and innocent weirdness. The ability to see through the clouds of hype surrounding other lesser bands and grab on tight to this band and record. So clap your hands, say yeah, and throw Islands a parade (wolf or otherwise) because Return to the Sea is an indie rock triumph!

Biography:by Daphne GA Carr Casiotone for the Painfully Alone is the lo-fi solo project of Portland, OR, indie boy Owen Ashworth. His songwriting is part Bright Eyes-sensitive singer/songwriter heartache balladry and Atom & His Package battery-operated antics. His weapons of choice are Casio SK-1 and his hot rod Casiotones. His lyrics are a coy-edged blend of Stephin Merritt's sarcasm and the Mountain Goats' earnestness.
Loosely a concept album of clever musical voice mails, his first recording, Answering Machine Music: A Brief Album in Twelve Parts, was released in 1999 on his own label, Cassingle USA. Some of the tracks, including "Theme from David Hanna," were first recorded into his machine. Pocket Symphonies for Lonesome Subway Cars followed in 2001 on Tomlab and featured several "real" instruments, including cello and drums. In 2003, Ashworth released Twinkle Echo, followed by Etiquette in 2006.

The Raconteurs--Broken Boy Soldiers (New & Not bad)

Artist:The Raconteurs
Album:Broken Boy Soldiers
Release Date:May 16, 2006
Label:XL
Genre/Style:Pop Underground/Garage Rock Revival/Indie Rock

Tracks:
Review:by Stephen Thomas Erlewine It's hard to call the Raconteurs a genuine supergroup since there's only one true rock star in the quartet: the White Stripes' eccentric mastermind Jack White. Sometime between the recording of the Stripes' 2003 breakthrough Elephant and its willfully difficult 2005 follow-up, Get Behind Me Satan, White teamed up with fellow Detroit singer/songwriter Brendan Benson to write some tunes, eventually drafting the rhythm section of Cincinnati garage rockers the Greenhornes as support. Lasting just ten tracks, their debut, Broken Boy Soldiers, doesn't feel hasty, but it doesn't exactly feel carefully considered, either. It sounds exactly as what it is: a busman's holiday for two prodigiously gifted pop songwriters where they get to indulge in temptations that their regular gig doesn't afford. For Benson, he gets to rock harder than he does on his meticulously crafted solo albums; for White, he gets to shed the self-imposed restrictions of the White Stripes and delve into the psychedelic art pop he's hinted at on Elephant and Satan. Both Benson and White are indebted to '60s guitar pop, particularly the pop experiments of the mid-'60s — in its deliberately dark blues-rock, Elephant resembled a modern-day variation of the Stones' Aftermath, while Benson has drawn deeply from Rubber Soul and Revolver, not to mention the Kinks or any number of other '60s pop acts — so they make good, even natural, collaborators, with Brendan's classicist tendencies nicely balancing Jack's gleeful freak-outs. Appropriately, Broken Boy Soldiers does sound like the work of a band, with traded lead vocals and layers of harmonies, and no deliberate emphasis on one singer over the other. Even if there's a seemingly conscious effort to give Brendan Benson and Jack White equal space on this brief album, White can't help but overshadow his partner: as good as Benson is, White's a far more dynamic, innovative, and compelling presence — there's a reason why he's a star. But he does willingly embrace the teamwork of a band here, dressing up Benson's songs with weird flourishes, and playing some great guitar along the way. If the Raconteurs don't rock nearly as hard as the White Stripes — there's a reckless freedom in Jack's careening performances when he's supported only by Meg White — they do have some subtle sonic textures that the Stripes lack, and a tougher backbone than Benson's albums, which makes them their own distinctive entity. And they're a band that has their own identity — it may be somewhat stuck in the '60s, but they're not monochromatic, showcasing instead a variety of sounds, ranging from sparely ominous single "Steady, as She Goes" and the propulsive pop of "Hands" to the churning Eastern psychedelia of "Intimate Secretary" and the grandiose menace of the title track to the slow blues burn of "Blue Veins." These songs, and the five other cuts on this album, prove that the Raconteurs are nothing less than a first-rate power pop band — but they're nothing more, either. They may not rewrite the rules of pop on Broken Boy Soldiers, but they don't try to: they simply lie back and deliver ten good, colorful pop songs, so classic in style and concise in form that the album itself is barely over in 30 minutes. It's brief and even a little slight, but it's almost as much fun to listen to as it must have been to make.

Rose Melberg--Cast Away The Clouds (2006)

Artist:Rose Melberg
Album:Cast Away The Clouds
Release Date:Apr 25, 2006
Label:Double Agent
Genre/Style:Indie Pop

Tracks:1. Take Some Time 2. Orchard 3. Cold Sea 4. Cast Away the Clouds 5. Irene 6. Spin 7. Little Bird 8. Something Else 9. Four Walls 10. Constant and True 11. Your Tears 12. Each New Day

Review:by Tim Sendra Rose Melberg's Cast Away the Clouds is simply enchanting. With only minimal help (the occasional piano, harmony vocal, and violin), the ex-Softies singer has crafted an intimate and sweet record that tenderly plucks heartstrings and will leave you with a warmed, if somewhat melancholy, heart. Melberg was always pegged as a twee cutie in the past, but a listen to any Softies record shows a songwriter of simple grace with a real ability to cut through the haze of everyday life and hit you where it counts, gently but with lasting effects. This record removes any last traces of indie pop from her sound and reveals a grown-up and sophisticated vocalist; indeed, Melberg has never sounded as soft on love songs (like the lilting ballad "The Orchard" or "Little Bird") or as transcendentally sad on broken-hearted ballads (like "Take Some Time," "Cast Away the Clouds," and "Your Tears"). It sounds like the few years spent building a life away from music might have added just a little bit more power to her already nearly magical voice. All this talk of change may frighten longtime Melberg followers, but don't worry — she hasn't changed her musical approach that much. The first notes of the daisy-fresh opener, "Take Some Time," let you know you are on familiar ground. As with the Softies, the album is built around acoustic guitar with a touch of electric guitar here and there as well as some stray piano, flute, and percussion. She sticks to this simple sound most of the time; only the uncharacteristically bouncy "Irene" breaks free and adds some soft rock piano and gentle drums. In less adept hands, the relatively homogeneous sound of the record might be cause for malaise, but Melberg manages to cast a spell instead. This could be down to Melberg's angel-sweet vocals — recorded more closely than ever before, she sounds like she is sitting right next to you. When she harmonizes with herself, you might feel like you are sitting next to her on a cloud drifting right up to heaven. Perfect to ease you out of heartache or to warm a frozen heart, Cast Away the Clouds is the kind of small masterpiece that offers proof that the album is still alive and well in 2006. It also offers proof that Rose Melberg, great as she was in the Softies, Go Sailor, and on her previous solo effort, has jumped to the major leagues.

Josh Ritter--The Animal Years (New & Recommended)

Artist:Josh Ritter
Album:The Animal Years
Release Date:Mar 20, 2006
Label:V2Genre/Style:Alternative Country-Rock/Contemporary Folk

Tracks:1. Here At The Right Time 2. Thin Blue Flame 3. Best For The Best 4. Good Man 5. One More Mouth 6. In The Dark 7. Idaho 8. Lillian, Egypt 9. Monster Ballads 10. Wolves 11. Girl In The War

Review:by James Christopher Monger Idaho-bred singer/songwriter Josh Ritter's V2 Records debut follows in the footsteps of 2003's Hello Starling only in instrumentation. While he retains his literate tongue and expressive voice, there is far less humor on Animal Years than on his previous two outings. Producer Brian Deck (Iron & Wine, Modest Mouse) keeps Animal Years intimate but transient, like a circus train crawling through a small town on a busy Saturday afternoon. Essentially built around two startlingly affecting diatribes on the war in Iraq, Ritter utilizes the voices of Peter and Paul, as well as Laurel & Hardy, to eke some kind of explanation from both the Administration and the Creator. The first, the deceptively sweet-sounding "Girl in the War," threatens "The angels fly around in there, but we can't see them/I got a girl in the war, Paul I know that they can hear me yell/If they can't find a way to help her they can go to Hell." The second, "Thin Blue Flame," is a nearly ten-minute rant that follows the Velvet Underground "Heroin" arc of tinder to spark to full-on blaze in a way that hasn't worked for anyone in a long time, but most certainly does here. The other cuts never reach the same heights, but standouts such as "Wolves," with its sunrise gallop and "Whole of the Moon"-era Waterboys piano, and the languid "Monster Ballads" soar only inches beneath them.

Chris Isaak--Best Of Chris Isaak (Recommended)

Artist:Chris Isaak
Album:Best Of Chris Isaak
Release Date:May 9, 2006
Label:Reprise
Genre/Style:Roots-Rock Pop/Rock College-Rock

Tracks:1. San Francisco Days 2. Somebody’s Crying 3. Wicked Game 4. Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing 5. Let Me Down Easy 6. Two Hearts 7. King Without A Castle 8. Only The Lonely 9. Speak Of The Devil 10. Blue Spanish Sky 11. You Owe Me Some Kind Of Love 12. Can’t Do A Thing (To Stop Me) 13. Let’s Have A Party 14. Dancin' 15. Blue Hotel 16. Please 17. I Want You To Want Me 18. Forever Blue (Acoustic Version)

Review:by Stephen Thomas Erlewine In many ways, Chris Isaak is a perfect candidate for a "best-of" compilation: he has been consistent over the years, not only in the quality of his output but in his music, which hasn't strayed much from the sweetly moody retro-pop — part Elvis, a large part Roy Orbison, a small part early Neil Diamond — he essayed on his 1985 debut, Silvertone. As such, his records can be a little interchangeable, but even the bad ones are enjoyable, and when they're mixed and matched as they are here on his first-ever compilation, they hold together as well as if it were a proper album. Not that Best of Chris Isaak is exactly a "greatest-hits" — he only had seven charting Billboard singles, and three of them aren't here; it's understandable that the 2004 Christmas tune "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" isn't here, but 1989's "Don't Make Me Dream About You" and 1995's "Go Walking Down There," while not big hits, may be missed by some casual listeners, particularly since this is a generous 18-track compilation that finds space for such OK relative rarities as a cover of Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" and an acoustic version of "Forever Blue." But these are the kind of complaints that are found only if somebody is looking for flaws, since otherwise Best of Chris Isaak is an expertly chosen selection of his best easy-rolling, slyly sexy retro-pop, containing his four big hits ("Wicked Game," "Can't Do a Thing (To Stop Me)," "Somebody's Crying," "Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing") along with many of his best album tracks, like "San Francisco Days," "Two Hearts," "Speak of the Devil," "You Owe Me Some Kind of Love," and "Dancin'," among others. It's so well done and so comprehensive, it's easy to imagine that for many listeners — particularly those who liked Isaak's style, whether musical or personal — that this will be all the Chris Isaak they'll ever need.

Candi Staton--His Hands (Recommended)

Artist:Candi Staton
Album:His Hands
Release Date:Apr 4, 2006
Label:Astralwerks
Genre/Style:Soul/Southern Soul

Tracks:1. You Don't Have Far To Go2. When Hearts Grow Cold 3. It's Not Easy Letting Go 4. His Hands 5. How Do I Get Over You?6. You Never Really Wanted Me 7. I'll Sing A Love Song To You8. In Name Only 9. Running Out Of Love 10. Cry To Me 11. When Will I?

Review:by Andy Kellman The successful self-titled reissue of Fame-era material released in early 2004 allowed Candi Staton to make this, her first secular album in several years. Where 1999's Outside In was a way to take advantage of her unplanned return to the clubs — a couple singles released during the '90s used a vocal she recorded for a documentary about a man's struggle with life-threatening obesity — His Hands is 100 percent Southern soul. Staton involves several family members and longtime associates, including son Marcus Williams (a seasoned drummer who has played with her for years), daughter Cassandra Hightower, sister Maggie Staton Peebles, and Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section organist Barry Beckett. It might be surprising to see that Lambchop's Mark Nevers produced the session, and that Lambchop ally Lloyd Barry arranged the horns, but both men have done extensive work with Staton's peers in the gospel world. Though seven of the 11 songs are provided by others (Merle Haggard, Red Simpson, Bert Berns, Will Oldham), Staton uses almost all of the album to work through the pain caused by her brutal past relationships, some of which came and went as she was churning out gospel material. Something like this has evidently been a long time coming. Going by her performances, she's possibly more familiar with the emotions running through the likes of "When Hearts Grow Cold" and "You Never Really Wanted Me" than the songwriters, and her voice remains a rich and powerful instrument — it's amazing how little her voice has changed through nearly four decades. Even when the arrangements come too close to resembling slight facsimiles of classic Southern soul (which isn't too frequently), Staton's heartache is enough to cut through your soul. This is a very good album, and knowing that Staton seems to have cleared a glorious path through her dependencies and abusive relationships makes it all the more sweet.

iTunes Pricing To Hold At $.99

iTunes Pricing To Hold At $.99

Apple's iTunes Music Store has renewed its contracts with the four major labels, and the computer company's download service will hold the pricing line at 99 cents per track.

"We renewed our agreement with the major music companies, and we're pleased to continue offering iTunes customers music at 99 cents from our library of more than 3 million songs," an Apple spokesperson said. The company firmly declined further comment.

Apple's iTunes, which dominates download music sales with an estimated 80% market share, has been faced with complaints from the majors about its 99-cent pricing, which covers newly released music and back-catalog titles. Some label executives -- most notably WMG CEO Edgar Bronfman -- had agitated for variable pricing of Apple's downloads.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs shot back at one public forum last year that the labels' call for a different pricing structure was "greedy."

A spokesperson for EMI Music said the company does not comment on contractual matters. Sony BMG Music, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group did not return calls seeking comment.

One industry source noted that Apple has the ability to price its online music in whatever manner it sees fit, just as brick-and-mortar retailers set the price for CDs, and that the computer company's contracts with the majors address only the wholesale pricing of the labels' wares.

Van Hunt--On The Jungle Floor (Recommended)

Artist:Van Hunt
Album:On The Jungle Floor
Release Date:Apr 4, 2006
Label:Capitol
Genre/Style:Neo-Soul/Urban

Reviews:by Andy Kellman Van Hunt's first album peaked at the bottom of the Top 40 R&B Albums chart. Anyone who heard it and liked it couldn't help but be surprised that it didn't create a bigger ripple, particularly since it wasn't hard to imagine hearing the likes of "Dust" or "Down Here in Hell (With You)" on regular daytime rotation across the country. But the album sort of tanked, despite its unmistakable strengths and positive reviews. Hunt must have been somewhat frustrated while watching similarly organic and musical singles by Anthony Hamilton, John Legend, and Alicia Keys ride to glory, but then again, all he has needed for a cold dose of reality is a talk with frequent collaborator Rahsaan Patterson, another supremely talented and likeminded artist who has had to settle for an unfairly cult-size following. Hunt's second album, On the Jungle Floor, has no overtones of desire for crossing over, so perhaps he's already content with his position. In fact, the album seems less self-conscious and compromised than the debut. Hunt's songwriting is also sharper and more assured, though it doesn't always pay off; he's occasionally overambitious and overextends himself when he goes out of his way to prove his individualism. Minus a few songs, the album would be a great deal tighter and run no risk of neutralizing any of the aspects that make Hunt one of the smartest and most slyly creative R&B artists. He continues to boldly blend styles like some of his heroes (Prince, Rick James), goes off on a couple hard rock tangents (one of which retains his melodic sense), and continuously finds ways to base the material he writes in '70s soul and funk without making any blatant throwbacks (even the flashes of fellow Dayton natives Slave within "Stage Lights" are kept brief). At least eight of the songs written in whole or in part by Hunt are worth singling out, but the cover of Iggy Pop and James Williamson's "No Sense of Crime" must be mentioned for its pumping of Technicolor into the black-and-white original, as if it had been meant for the second side of Sly & the Family Stone's There's a Riot Goin' On or Prince & the Revolution's Around the World in a Day.

The Dresden Dolls--Yes, Virginia (Recommended)

Artist:The Dresden Dolls
Album:Yes, Virginia
Release Date:Apr 18, 2006
Label:Roadrunner
Genre/Style:Cabaret Alternative Pop/ Rock

Reviews:by Heather Phares The Dresden Dolls could never be accused of being shy and retiring, but on their second full-length, Yes, Virginia..., they sound more confident than ever, igniting their cabaret-rock with more crazed inventiveness and you-are-there immediacy. While there's nothing as instantly captivating as their first album's winsome "Coin-Operated Boy" or the defiant "Girl Anachronism," Yes, Virginia... is a more powerful and consistent set of songs overall, moving from musically and emotionally complex ballads like "Delilah" and the album closer, "Sing," to shouty, forceful numbers such as "Necessary Evil" and "Sex Changes." Sean Slade and Paul Kolderie's production adds to the bigger, more rock-inspired sound of the album, which invigorates Amanda Palmer's character sketches. While the highly theatrical, stylized sound of the Dresden Dolls might seem to be the substance of their music — and, admittedly, it does draw the listener in right away — it's the strong songwriting that makes the band truly impressive. Palmer's lyrics have a mix of sympathy and disdain for the people and subjects in her songs that makes them seem very honest in spite, or perhaps because of, their theatricality. On "Backstabber," she dismisses a "greedy little fit-haver" with a "God, I feel for you, fool" that's a perfect blend of fury and pity. She goes after and celebrates uncomfortable moments, whether it's cataloging the drunken haze of "My Alcoholic Friends" (which is one of the jauntiest, poppiest distillations of the Dolls' sound to date) or "First Orgasm," a bleak and almost creepily intimate ballad that's not at all jokey despite lines such as "I'm taking matters into my own hands" and "there won't be any second coming." Full of ambitious twists and turns, equally vulnerable and sarcastic, Yes, Virginia... alludes to the famous 1897 New York Sun editorial that reassured a little girl that Santa Claus exists for a reason: as arch and ironic as the Dresden Dolls might seem on the surface, inside their music, there's a surprising amount of hope and heart.

Mike Johnson--Gone Out Of Your Mind (Recommended)

Artist:Mike Johnson
Album:Gone Out Of Your Mind
Release Date:Apr 25, 2006
Label:Up
Genre/Style:Indie Rock

Reviews:by Tim Sendra Would you believe that Mike Johnson's new album is a bright and sunny pop confection that will have you singing along full blast with the top down on your way to the beach? Nah, you're not that gullible, are you? The truth is that the man who makes Mark Lanegan seem like the guy wearing a lampshade at the office party (at the firm of Gloom, Doom, and Misery) is back, and he is as somber and unflinchingly dark as ever. This time he is kind of angry, too, instead of hopelessly melancholy. Apart from the distraught beer-in-my-tears ballad "If the World Hadn't Gone Insane," he's also set aside the country influences that permeated his previous work. Gone as well are the orchestral arrangements and wide-screen productions. What remains on Gone Out of Your Mind is a stripped-down, storming guitar record with a decidedly stark view of the politics and morality of the day. The two centerpieces of the album are the blazing cover of Junior Byles' "Fade Away" and "Pass By," both of which feature desperate and searching vocals from Johnson and titanic guitar duels with him and Brett Nelson torching their respective fretboards. The rest of the album is just as desperate and raw. On the uptempo tracks like "On Track Now" and "Can't Get It Right," Johnson and his band, the Evildoers (including Nelson, Jim Roth of Built to Spill on bass, and Jason Albertini on drums), kick up lots of angry dust; on the ballads like "Gone Out of Your Mind" they sound positively wounded and alone. This is not a record for the faint of heart or the easily bruised. Mike Johnson is either one of the most broken men in the musical world or he is a damn fine actor. Either way, this album is a welcome return for an underrated artist who deserves some attention. And one who needs a hug or ten.

The Concretes--In Colour (Recommended)

Artist:The Concretes
Album:In Colour
Release Date:Apr 4, 2006
Label:Astralwerks
Genre/Style:Indie Pop/Swedish Pop

Reviews:by Heather Phares With the Concretes always finding new ways to explore and expand their irresistible pop, Concretes in Colour finds the Swedish collective making another sonic jump, just as they did between their first album and their early EPs. Granted, this album isn't nearly as big a step forward as The Concretes was from the Boy, You Better Run Now era; actually, with its simpler production and unhurried songs, it could be seen as a step to the side for a bit of fresh air. The mix of chugging guitars and brass on "Fiction" and "Chosen One" is the closest Concretes in Colour comes to the Velvet Undergound/Motown mash-up of The Concretes, but the rest of the album finds a happy medium between the lushness of the first album and the sweet sketches of the band's earlier work, and throws in touches of folk, country, and pop of all kinds for good measure. "On the Radio" is more Petula Clark than Diana Ross, while "Sunbeams" boasts coyly charming lyrics like "I didn't know you were you." Meanwhile, the beautiful harmonies, mandolins, and strings on "Change in the Weather" and "Grey Days" sound like the influence of the Concretes' equally charming side project, Heikki, has been filtered back into the main band's music. And, though Concretes in Color is overall a less showy collection of songs than the debut album was, "Song for the Song"'s quicksilver changes and the spacy nighttime ballad "Tomorrow" show that the Concretes haven't lost their sense of mischief or flair for the theatrical. Though there are a few draggy songs on the album and "Your Call," a ballad with the Magic Numbers' Romeo Stodart, doesn't go much of anywhere, Concretes in Colour is still full of quietly vibrant moments.

Built To Spill--You In Reverse (Recommended)

Artist:Built To Spill
Album:You In Reverse
Release Date:Apr 11, 2006
Label:Warner Bros
Genre/Style:Indie Rock

Reviews:by Tim Sendra Built to Spill haven't released an album for five years, and the time off seems to have rejuvenated the band — You in Reverse is full of fire and energy. The bandmembers play with a thrilling blend of abandon and sensitivity on this mix of accessible guitar rockers, twisting and turning guitar workouts, and somber balladry with enough intelligence and emotion to put groups half their age to shame (and by the looks of the gray in their beards, they are getting up there). Many of the songs on You in Reverse are midtempo ballads, some quiet and autumnal ("Traces"), most trippy and bursting with wild and dramatic guitar solos ("The Wait," "Gone"). All of them are quite heart-rending, with Doug Martsch's melancholy everyman vocals and the emotion (in his voice but especially in the guitars) flowing like tears from the speakers. Most of the tracks also feature spiraling guitar solos and climaxes that conjure up images of the bandmembers on-stage at an outdoor stadium jamming their beards off as the crowd goes bananas. These songs are impressive, but the album really shines on the tracks that boost the tempo. "Conventional Wisdom" is a raging rocker that rides an inspired guitar melody into alt-rock guitar nirvana, sounding like the best tune Dinosaur Jr. never wrote (although those slackers never would have thrown a chamber music-inspired instrumental bridge into the middle of a song before freaking out with an epic solo). "Mess with Time" charges ahead like an angry rhino, kicking up guitar sparks and sounding a lot like classic Wipers in the process. Best of all is the amazing "Goin' Against Your Mind," an almost nine-minute guitar explosion that kicks off the album in breathtaking style. By the time it's through playing, you'll be hard-pressed to imagine a way the rest of the album could stand up to its intensity and drama. That the record does manage to acquit itself superbly is quite an accomplishment. Though there are no great surprises on You in Reverse, it is one of Built to Spill's strongest efforts, and anyone who has followed their career knows that this is high praise indeed.

AFX--Chosen Lords (Recommended)

Artist:AFX
Album:Chosen Lords
Release Date:Apr 18, 2006
Label:Rephlex
Genre/Style:Experimental Techno/IDM

Reviews:by John Bush In 2001, when Aphex Twin fans got what they'd been hoping for — a new album — they soon learned that not every Aphex Twin work was pure genius. (Granted, they'd heard very little evidence of mediocrity before that point.) Drukqs was a rambling wreck of an album, a hodgepodge of material that appeared to have been plundered from at least three distinct periods, stretching over a full decade of Richard D. James' career. The Analord series of 12" singles, inaugurated with January 2005's Analord 10 and eventually including ten additional volumes, was much different. It proved that James was still capable of brilliance — not just scattered brilliance, but consistently excellent and occasionally stupendous work. The Analord material was throwback acid techno that moved at a fast pace and showed evidence of a malevolent streak behind it, just like the Aphex commercial breakouts Come to Daddy and Windowlicker. Fortunately, while the Analord singles featured much in the way of melody and subtlety, they lacked the cartoonish imagery that marred those two EPs (particularly the vocals and the video clips). More so even than "Come to Daddy," the Analord material found Aphex Twin returning to the music of his early career; stylistically, it's the logical follow-up to James' Caustic Window and Analogue Bubblebath material of the very early '90s, which attempted to (and usually succeeded in) creating the freakiest techno ever produced, without either deserting a steady beat or straying into self-conscious experimentation. Whether embracing a novelty (he covered the early-'70s synth hit "Buttered Popcorn") or pursuing highly evocative techno (the forerunner of IDM), the Caustic Window material was some of the best work of his or any other producer's career. Just one caveat: Chosen Lords serves to compile a few highlights from the Analord series, but not all of them, and it includes less than 25 percent of the material; vinyl is still the way to hear those tracks, and this compilation is simply an introduction to the 11 separate 12" releases.
